DSLR Sensor cleaning

rbrown

I think therefore I think I am
Hi fellas,

I'm beginning to get spotty pics. Any recommendations for sensor cleaning products/techniques? I guess it's a pretty delicate procedure. Camera is a Nikon D80 which I've only had for a couple of months.

Cheers,

Rich

Get a blower, Rocket ones are good (about £8 on flea bay) READ THE MANUAL to see about mirror lock up function and give it a good puff out, if its still spotty you can buy cleaning fluid & swabs and have a go if your feeling confident, the alternative is to get it cleaned professionaly but that will cost.

cheers paul

I've a rocket blower, it gets some of the stuff out. when you use it, invert the camera above the blower, using the MIRROR LOCKUP function (read the manual). If you use the time exposure function the sensor is still charged and attracts the crap you're blowing around.

I also use an Arctic Butterfly, which helps with the more stubborn stuff.

For anything that's still stuck there, it's wet swabs (the specialist camera cleaning stuff).

I took a DSLR into the Australian outback for 2 weeks and was changing lenses in the back of a van. Unsurprisingly, I ended up with fairly severe spotting > f/11. When the blower and a camera shop clean failed, I used a pec-pad wrapped and taped round a tongue depressor and wet with isopropanol. Ensure mirror lock-up and a full battery! It worked, but I did sweat a bit. I think there's a how-to link on Ken Rockwell's site.

The alternatives are to buy Olympus who are often said to be the only manufacturer to get sensor cleaning right or spend £9K on exotic German kit regardless of cleaning ability. Sorry, in facetious mood after reading some other unrelated threads.

I've been using swabs for about five years, no problems at all. A pro friend has even used earbuds and lighter fluid, again no problems.

Guys, Ken is just plain wrong. A Rocket blower is a good way to inject more crap into the sensor bay. OK it will blow away big bits of dust but it will also blow in more dust from the room. The best combination is:

Sensor Swabs
Eclipse Fluid
and the Visible Dust Blower with the inlet filter

Don't pussy foot around when cleaning with the swabs, Sensors all have some kind of glass cover which is pretty robust - just imaging you are polishing some find lead crystal and use a similar amount of cleaning vigour.

Agreed Cliff - i've cleaned my sensors with swaps and cleaning fluid and never had problems. I've managed to swift some really bad stuff as well, sort of like tar that got smeared on one corner of a sensor without problems.

One other technique which is quite fun and easy is to use a brush - you have to clean and get it staticy first. I use a small synthetic paint brush - a clean one ;-) This is the best thing to carry in your camera bag for emergencies.
