DIY XPS

marvan

On the banks of the Tay
Hi everyone

Has anyone any experience of making a diy xps2

I only have schoolboy experience of electronics, but can solder, and am willing to learn.

I had thought of making it easy for myself by using teddys pre made regulators.

Your thoughts and guidance would be very much appreciated

Cheers

Marvan

Hi Mike

Thank you for your kindness and help

I had seen some, but the ones I hadn't seen were most helpful

I don't want to "reinvent the wheel" and wondered whether anyone had completed one and would like to share their wisdom with me

I was hoping for a circiut diagram, and advice on the components used ,and where best to source them.

Many thanks in anticipation

Cheers

Marvan

Hi Marvan
All of this stuff is available built up so its easy to put a power supply together for any device you just have to know the input connection type, pin out of the unit being supplied, the voltage polarity and current.
also check that the smoothing and regulation is not done inside the unit its self as some power supplies are little more than a transformer in a box and supply raw AC.

For a DC power supply all you need is the following
1. a box, lots of us here like the ones from HIFI2000 Modu in italy

2. a transformer

3. a rectifier smoothing circuit
Hacker has made some nice boards for this very purpose so you could contact him on this forum, or alternatively the Cap6 from Avondale audio is excellent
http://avondaleaudio.com/diy-audio/cap6/#postTabs_ul_183
or you could make your own from 2 big smothing caps and a bridge rectifier.

4. a regulator circuit
It depends on the input to the device but a reg could be a one of
Teddy super reg http://www.teddypardo.com/
Avondale tracking pre reg http://avondaleaudio.com/diy-audio/tracking-pre-regulator/
ALWSR http://www.at-view.co.uk/alwsr.htm

5 some cables to connect it all together, and the correct plug for the back of the equipment.

Avondale TPX power supplies are very highly regarded and come a lot cheaper that the Naim stuff speak to LesW and he can make anything you need.
or you could by the real thing

Hope that helps

umm the XPS requires different voltages and also -ve DC regulation in places

from memory there is

  • +/- 22V (6 analog opamps).
  • +15V for the digital circuits plus clock
  • an additional +15V is needed for the servo and front panel
  • +/- 10V needed for both DACs (Analog and Digital supply)

not as simple as lashing together a HiCap but its still doable... There may be a pinout lurking on the Acostica Page (I know there is one for the 52PS)

Anyone know if the Avondale TPX is capable of -VE or was it only built with +VE in mind?

Something I've been curious about for a while with regard to a PSU for my machine....
