Default search engine on MS Edge

Sue Pertwee-Tyr

Accuphase all the way down
Can anybody tell me how to change the default search engine on MS Edge from Bing to Google. I know Google has its downsides, but at least it doesn't have the US bias that Bing has. Invariably if I search for something, most of the results are .com addresses in the US. I just did a Bing search for 'Volvo specialists near me' and the third result was offering a list of trusted garages in Nevada and Louisiana...

You can do it in the address bar following the instructions above, but not in that little thingy that is there when you open a new tab. This is mine

It's the new tab with its 'search here' line, as mandryka shows, that defaults to Bing and there doesn't seem to be any way round it. I wouldn't mind so much if it would just prioritise search results that are relevant to my location. I'll just have to remember to use the address bar rather than that tempting search window, from now on.

Do you want to change your Home Page to Google UK? I have mine set to Office365 but have the New Tab go to https://google.co.uk using an Edge Add On called "New Tab Custom URL"

How does it know where you are?
I did your search and the first result was for a UK site (I am not in the UK).
Surely a better search would be Volvo specialists near Effingham.

I think, if you allow it, search engines can infer your approximate location from your IP address and the node you connect to the internet from. Or something.

There are a few ways - HTML5 Geolocation is built in, IP Address, Wi Fi Access Point and Bluetooth plus the Site may have been coded to find it using Javascript of similar

I was interested in this so I did some research.

Searching Restaurants near me produces local restaurants.

Searching Volvo specialists gives global results.
