There's one near me, the early version (pre 510/520) with the long power amp and the matching pre amp plus a home built power supply with Crimson components...should I jump?

That's up to you and your expectations obviously! Power amp better than pre but both together better than a similar dated Quad pre and power (IMHO)... but not LOADS better...
