Connecting subwoofer to preamp

Would I be right in thinking that I could run a subwoofer from my preamp using the preamp outputs to a rca or xlr low level input?
So if possible is all I need is a 2 into 1 cable?
I want to avoid connecting it via the speakers or power amp speaker posts if at all possible.

That's how I do it, with an XLR splitter cable from the pre. I feed a MiniDSP plate amp to power two subs, it allows full control from my laptop via ethernet, controlling volume, crossover point and slope.
