Jazz enthusiasts might be interested to know that WKCR in New York, wkcr.org on the web, is having one on their broadcast marathons, this one featuring Coleman Hawkins who was born this day in 1904. It is one of several birthday broadcasts the station does every year; all are well produced, by student DJs, and worth listening to.

Off at a tangent, I’m thoroughly enjoying WKCR tonight. The endearingly ham-fisted DJ has meandered in a rather Marchbanksian way, starting with Louis Armstrong and specifically his guitarist (playing just the guitar solo again at the end) then discussing (in a very non-didactic way) resonator guitars and the evolution into solid bodies, then (via Chuck Berry) musing whether ‘it’s got a back beat, you can’t lose it’ means Eddie Van Halen (Eruption) is designed to be danced to or listened to in a tux, and thus less rock’n’roll than Sonny Sharrock and Peter Brötzmann (Iron Path)… good fun. He’s now moved on to Here Come the Warm Jets - not sure why yet.
