Classic British Modern & Free Jazz Recommendations

Nubya Garcia and her band are flying on the new Radio 6 festival set now on iPlayer. I'd love to hear the band do a trio set, they really listen to each other.

It doesn't seem that long ago I saw her playing in the front room of a pub in New Cross. I think those days are over!

Source hasn't gelled with me yet quite as much as Nubya's 5ive so I'll check out the iPlayer set and see how it sounds live - thanks!

I've watched the Poppy Ajudha set now and, although I wouldn't call it jazz* (maybe nu-soul) it's well worth a watch. PA is a really passionate and strong performer.

*She does her version of Watermelon Man that was on the Blue Note Reimagined album last year.

Only spotted this earlier. This is seriously good! They are just getting better and better as a band. I really want to get to see them live at some point.

Even though I have an original copy of 'Le Dejeuner Sur l’Herbe', I'm definitely going to pick up another copy: I love the care Gearbox take over their masterings.

Hopefully we finally get to see the Mike Taylor Trio/Quartet albums too...

Theo,
I only have the clarity reissue of the eponymous Mike Taylor Trio. I don't know of any other Trio records by him, except his compositions with Cream and Pete Brown, unless there is unissued stuff, do you know any? I believe he only had two LP's issued; Trio and Pendulum as a Quartet while alive. A Quartet recording of 'Mandala' that is from a tape recorded by John Hiseman is due out in a limited edition on Bandcamp in October. https://jazzinbritain1.bandcamp.com/album/mandala

Have you seen Luca Ferrari's blog spot on Mike Taylor: https://miketaylorpianoplayer.blogspot.com/ ? He has also written a book about Mike Taylor although I have not read that.

Hi Jim

Thanks, I have 'Trio" and 'Pendulum' on CD. Pendulum is an exceptional mastering on Sunbeam, sadly taken out of release after Universal objected. I also have 'Mandala' on CD and have read the blog.

There is another couple of releases due. Firstly an odd compilation:

...and an upcoming RSD release:

There may be another too. It's a good time to discover his music.

I've been playing about on Instagram during lock-down which has been quite interesting (In terms of some of the people who I've managed to connect with, I've certainly been put onto some lovely things....)
My page features a fair bit of British / Euro Jazz with 1 min films (Can't put longer on Instagram) If you are tremendously bored or seriously into obscure Jazz feel free to have a mooch about. Search for @audio_grail for my page or #audiograil
