Christof Faller of Illusonic on EQ

Purité Audio

Trade: Purite Audio
I asked Christof Faller of 'Illusonic' for his thoughts on EQ, his response.

A good equaliser filter is "linear", that is, there is no non-linear distortion.
Good filters may add some time spread, especially when applied at low frequencies.
But when you have a room mode, the room itself adds incredible time spread.
Compared to the time spread added by the room, the time spread added by the
equalizer is negligible.

At higher frequencies, anyways, one should only use very moderate equalizers
(not too much gain, not too narrow), which then results in minimal time spread.
Minimum phase filters, as we use, are optimised to keep transients as sharp as
possible. In comparison to linear phase filters, there is no danger of pre-echoes.

Any IAP owner's manual (see web site under support), explains what each type
of EQ does.

Keith.
