Christmas Wine II

Why would you?
A chenin blanc from the Loire that "could easily be mistaken for a great dry Burgundy." That seems a bizarre description.
Because I like Montlouis, because Jacky Blot makes terrific Montlouis and with 25% off it’s approaching a bargain price. QED.
Frankly, Waitrose could compare it to Coca-Cola for all I care!

Presumably that wine will keep for years,if you were
to try one ,let's hear your opinion.

Of course
Excellent! With reservations, see below...

I’m spent out this month, as I said earlier. I might have a look in France on my next jaunt in December. If not, we’ll have to wait for mander’s opinion. Oh, lord - I’m quaking now, wondering if it is going to follow the other bottles that failed to pass muster into the infamous stockpot...

After all the confusion, it is definitely the last day for 25% off at Waitrose Cellar today. They seem to have found more of the Montlouis I mentioned yesterday, plus if you really want to push the boat out they have Beaucastel 2017 at £48.75, which is only a few pennies more than I ended up paying after buying EP. Bastards. Still, an ideal purchase if you are looking for Christmas Wine. Christmas 2030, that is.

By chance I popped into my most local but still out-of-the-way town centre Waitrose for other shopping. I couldn't resist arranging to renew my acquaintance with Mount Difficulty Bannockburn NZ Pinot Noir; stock up on some standard Champagnes; and splash out on some Pian della Vigne Brunello di Montalcino since it's a long while since I ventured into that DOCG.

There's certainly sufficient choice in "the cellar" now for all eventualities over Christmas and the New Year.

A white for a change: Van Volxem Alte Reben. A riesling but unusual. Old vines giving plenty of character. A 2017 but I read that these can evolve nicely so will try to keep the next one for 2023.

Just bought a pile of stuff from this company

The General Wine Company Shipper Merchant West Sussex Hampshire Surrey

Basically I know the owner's wife, and one thing lead to another, I sent them a list of wines I've been enjoying recently and asked them if they've got anything they think I may like, I think I said max £30 a bottle, and they came up with a list of eight wines for less than £120. These

Anyway I'll post if there's anything interesting in the batch.

Tenuta Tomasella Friuli - 2019 - Cabernet franc.

Totally delicious, spicy 4D complex textured wine, with subtle overtones and third order harmonics. Just really well made - the balance of fruit and spice is impressive. And the biggest bargain I’ve found since posting here - £12.99. I’d be happy if I’d payed twice as much, more.

And for once something good and affordable available from a bricks and mortar shop in London, the capital of the world

Things are looking up,I'd buy more wine now.

Opened a Damilano Barolo Liste 2010 yesterday for an old friend.
And not long after we finished it heard that another old friend lost his wife to cancer. Certainly sobered us up. As if we needed any more misery this year.

Looking for Caravaggio in Naples

Roma

Here are my equivalent photos of Italian jaunts from a couple of decades back. The activities are way less refined than yours, naturally.

Rome. Restaurant I was told I had to eat at. If the cops eat there, it must be OK, right? Found myself seated next to an American on the communal table. We were both annoyed we weren’t the only non-Romans there.

Naples. First century porn discovered at Pompeii, aka The Secret Cabinet. Open for something like two hours a week, and you had to make an appointment. At the allotted time we were all gathered outside the locked room, trying to look like serious art connoisseurs and to keep straight faces.

On second thoughts I’d best link to this one so as not to risk causing offence.

Pan shagging an understandably vexed-looking goat was the piece that made me chuckle the most I felt had the deepest artistic integrity, but as there’s a pic of that on Wikipedia (search for Secret Cabinet) I won’t bother you with mine.
