Choke Regulation PS

Hi,

Several well regarded (?) sources say that choke regulation is the way to go for a low noise well regulated power supply.

The size, weight and therefore the cost of the chokes required are oft quoted reasons for their failure to make an impact in the mainstream.

Since those concerns are largely reduced in DIY terms, has anybody seriously looked at this option?

Cheers,

Isn't that mostly for tube amps? in tube amps it's almost a must to use choke regulation. I haven't seen many SS amps use choke regulation.

The bulk of choke i/p PSU's is the downside, but the advantages are there.

The key is the choke can store energy resulting in a far better supply than a conventional rectified one.

That bulk kills though - you will need a beefy choke to support the power requirements of a solid state amp, although it may be feasible for line level stuff.

Andy.
