Canon 8800F scanner - any good?

Dudes,

Is this: http://www.lambda-tek.com/componentshop/index.pl?origin=gbase5.4&prodID=B85455 a goodun? I was going to get an Epson V500 but the prices seem to have gone up and I can't find it for less than 180 bones which is more than I want to spend. Is the Canon a reasonable alternative given that most of my scans are covered in finger prints etc. anyway?

There's also the Epson 4490 which is still around and was considered OK before the V7X0/V500 models.

Yes, I use the 4490 - it's the v500 without the fancy LED light. Works nicely for me.

AFAIK the V7X0 don't have a LED light either - so I don't think it's fundamental to the performance.

Like you, I missed out on the V500 at £130-ish and can't bring myself to buy it at £50 quid more!

The LED apparently is ready for action straight away, that's the only advantage AFAIK. As Patrick sez above, the v700 & v750 don't have an LED. But speed is the last thing you're going to be concerned with when scanning slides!

Sorry dudes, it was a little leg pulling that went wrong I didn't realise it was an LED scanner, I thought it was one of those blue hifi type LEDs that makes things sound better. No, I really don't care about speed etc. I just want something I can put colour MF negs on to and have it give me a properly colour balanced scan rather than having to play around in photoshop to remove the orange mask. So 4490 it is.
