Bumper Bach box set

Are there any views on this new 222CD DG release of Bach? It looks pretty good to me. I notice that there are cantatas from Gardiner, Suzuki, Kooopman and Herreweghe' etc, 2 Matthew Passions and so on. There's some Richter in the choral works, which is unfortunate, but I suppose it constitutes a document of historical performance (definitely not historically informed performance).

Edit: it's a little late to ask this question as I've just ordered the set.

Wow, that is a nice looking thing! A lovely affiliated ordering link here!

The things that interested me most in this set are the performances by Justin Taylor and Giuliano Carmignola, please let me know what you think of them. Also possibly Christian Schmitt’s contribution could be interesting.

I have the earlier Brilliant Classics complete Bach...

It’s wonderful to dip into and see just what a genius Bach was. Weekend mornings often involve picking one of the cantata disks at random - there are a lot of them.

I see you can get a used version for £50, a tremendous bargain.

I once tried to listen to each of the cantatas in the liturgical week for which it was present. Work commitments etc meant I didn't get very far, so perhaps I'll have another try with this box set.

I've set aside my Sunday mornings for just that for the last 30-odd years or so: all the Cantatas for each Sunday. Festivals and Feast days are a bit of challenge, remembering to keep track of them for one thing and finding the time for another.

I use information from here: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/LCY/Lutheran-2016-2020.htm to keep track of things.

It looks rather good, although I'd have to find somewhere to put it!. Hopefully a lot of older more "romantic" recordings (e.g. Karajan/BPO and the Brandenburgs) have disappeared from view. Although I have great respect for the late Dr. Richter as a great Bachian (I am so ancient that I have heard him conduct the Munich Bach Choir live (1975!!)), his cantata recordings were really quite ponderous, although he did have some great soloists (e.g. Fischer-Dieskau, Schreier).

It was discussed at some length on Saturday morning's review programme on Radio 3. Available online, no doubt. It was after Building a Library.

What’s needed to recreate the truly authentic experience, is to remove the seat cushions and turn the heating off in the auditorium.
