...the way it works is the majority of the people ideologically in “the middle” voted for the far right endgame... that’s why the most dangerous of all people are the comfy middle ground (who look the other way when anything nasty happens). This is why it is all sliding to the far right. In spite of — and because of — socialist “warriors”. The middle is now the right. The right is now the far right. The left are, if anything aligned with the liberally conservative. Socialist warriors are rare boogeymen, used to frighten pretty much everyone and are rare throwbacks to a language of politics no one in the UK has the stomach for.
Not really.

Remain was essentially the status quo.

Ergo, if the majority are happy with the status quo, then why would they vote for change?

People are naturally conservative (with a small c). It's a significant shift to opt for big change.

It's simple. Cameron gambled on knowing the public mood. He didn't, and thus he lost.

We’ve actually got something better. A parliamentary party that didn’t vote reflexively to trigger A50, or flip flop on EU membership, that doesn’t have MPs that take money off Tory Prime Ministers in return for votes in Parliament. That doesn’t take the lives of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians in illegal wars and doesn’t have voters that run to vote Tory in nearly fifty constituencies, putting a clown like Boris Johnson in power. It’s really not that complicated. Even you can get it Brian.
I do get all that, always have.

Just stop moaning about brexit, it’s not your top priority despite your thousands of posts in protest. Accept your fellow travellers ensuring it is more difficult to remove the tories from govt has been a major contributor to where we are today.

I doubt anyone can. Who said it was? Truss?
Gentle reminder that it seems to have slipped your mind to enlighten us which 20 countries have already done a trade deal with us, and which 20 are still champing at the bit to do so?

People are only naturally conservative (small c) while they get their cheap shit & their holidays in the sun. Watch it all go to hell when they can’t.

Yeah, maybe. I can see the logic in that.

But, traditionally, the British have never done 'revolution' like the French (for example).

I'd wager, if we have no deal, the first thing to happen would be a militant and angry bunch of French farmers and fisherman, protesting as only they know how.
In fact, I rather admire the way they defend their interests.

If new cars were subject to the a 10% tariff then Japanese/Chinese cars which are on a 7 year taper to zero tariff would have a competitive advantage. This is on top of Japanese high productivity and low Chinese labour cost.
What?

Are you suggesting that BMW et al would move their production of UK-destined models to the sunny uplands of China? ;)

It would be one way around the tariff I guess..

Part of the problem is Napoleon's catch 22 options. It is fish heads and cow muck on his doorstep, deal or no deal.

BMW and VW are already manufacturing in China and 10% plus labour savings could make this a viable option.

Aside from all of these arguments, posts here and everything else 'Brexit' a hell of o lot of businesses are taking huge hits - this on top of Covid.
Try to deal with HMRC (want a real headache - try sorting VAT & Duty deferment) carriers (realistically, you need to nominate one and stick with them to make inputs for clearance - either that or you have a class one honours in patience and understanding of looking through opaque glass)
This makes a real mess for those who had 'carriage paid' status with suppliers, as they now have zero option on who to use, and they will automatically add freight costs or say you pay the lot from here on in.
Dont even go to how long it will take to replace stock, or its costs moving forward.
I, personally, am utterly sick to death of the entire thing.
Yes, it needs to be done, but after 40+ years of business ownership, I cannot be positive in any way, shape or form about any of it.
Going into work on Monday will either show a decent profit uptake with the value of Sterling rising, (even back to 1.18 Euro/£ would be very nice) or a shite christmas as the £ tanks into freefall, which, being honest, appears likely.
To those saying "it will all be fine" well, considering it has not been for so long, and we are staring at the biggest downturn in 300yrs, how to be even remotely positive.
Forget the posturing, soundbites, if we had only done this, own it stuff.
This is real and happening and affecting millions of us already.
A deal would help (massively) but all this messing about has cost so much, both monetarily and health wise.

Sorry for all your troubles. But don't worry Brian, Colin or EV will be along to explain that it will all be fine and once no deal or crap deal goes through you will be much better off in the new year. Have you not heard about all the new wonderful deals and the fact the UK will now have full control. Really chin up, stop acting like a hard remainer, focus on the SNP and anybody else who voted remain they are the problem.

For the hard of thinking such as yourself.

It won’t be fine for as long as the UK has a tory govt.
