I've just had a listen, via phones, to (Stan) Kenton, Live in Europe, a Decca Phase 4 recording, recorded live in Holland in 1976, and it sounds very dynamic, so must try it soon through my speakers. Highly recommended.
Stan the man has form in this area. 'Stan Kenton conducts the Los Angeles Neophonic orchestra', which was produced by David Axelrod, might just be the big band album with the biggest band. It's a bit stiff in places, but pretty good and a great recording. Like a lot of this sort of music, good original copies go for peanuts.
Another two obvious recommendations/essentials that I don’t think have been mentioned yet are Miles Davis Sketches Of Spain and Gil Evans Out Of The Cool. Both related due to Gil Evans, both great and accessible albums that should be in every collection.

I'll look out for that one, foxwelljsly, thanks. I also have Standards in Silhouette, which gets played regularly.
I did like Maynard Ferguson a few years back when our local library loaned LPs, but haven't heard anything recently.
