Best debut album ever?

This is, of course, entirely subjective but interested to hear views. My vote goes to Steely Dan - Can't buy a Thrill. Codifies the SD sound, not a bad track on it & hints at greater things to come. My other thought was REM - Murmur.

Played that Dan album the other day. I love the “pop” elements to it, David Palmer’s voice lending itself to that sound. Always think it’s v different to their other stuff but in a good way.

It is a bit different but all the later traits are apparent

OK, fair enough, I acknowledged that in opening post. How can we talk objectively about music?

We can't which is why I don't, I look at what other people are listening to in the "listening now" thread but apart from that it's just like Hi-Fi, pretty pointless.

I am unable to narrow it down to one artist/band.

The Specials - The Specials

Beastie Boys - Licensed To ill.

Laurie Anderson - Big Science

DJ Shadow - Endtroducing

Public Enemy- Yo! Bum Rush The Show

Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables

Badly Drawn Boy - The Hour of Bewilderbeast

Iggy Pop / The Stooges - The Stooges

Kate Bush - The Kick Inside

Metallica- Kill 'Em All

Ian Dury - New Boots and Panties!!

Radiohead - Pablo Honey

The Jesus and Mary Chain - Psychocandy

Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine

The Ting Tings - We Started Nothing

Tracy Chapman - Tracy Chapman

The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico

I have all these records, and still play them frequently.

Without a shadow of doubt ... Tom Wait's "Closing Time" from '73. Just one of the most special, delicious albums of all time in my book! In fact ... going to spin it now!

Prefab Sprout - Swoon
Massive Attack _ Blue Lines
Donald Fagen - The Nightfly
King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King
Steven Wilson - Insurgentes

Swoon is one of my all time favourite albums... and it didn't occur to me for some reason...
