Basic question about electrical stuff

When I was growing a weed plant in my spare room I had an extractor fan going up the chimney that i attached a speed controller to so that the fan was not just on or off.

It was something like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0714FFG4F/?tag=pinkfishmedia-20

It worked really well. However, I no longer grow pot in my spare room but still have the switch.

I have just bought a product rotating table for my business like this: http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/707-5...0001&campid=5338728743&icep_item=262993479644

But it spins too fast. Will my fan switch also slow down the rpm of this table, please?

All you need is an old arm and a few records, you are away.

My guess would be it would not regulate the speed. Could you not put a heavier or larger rotating base on, this may slow it down.

Yes I could also slow the videos down but I worry about image quality. if this works it is the preferred solution as smaller items will require different speeds to larger items i suspect

Maybe. What youprobably have there is a triac dimmer, as used in light dimmers. This chops off a bit of the sine wave so that you get a power reduction. In cases like a hairdryer or fan, where speed is limited by power, this works. On something like a record player, which has a different kind of motor and speed is regulated by mains supply frequency, it won't. It will just turn at the same speed but with less power, and it will slow down if you load it. So in short, if your rotary display table has a significant resistance to rotation, like a fan, then a triac dimmer will slow it down. If it spins freely, no it won't.

Thanks.

Why didn't you buy a variable speed rotating table?
Yeah good question...this one is 60cm diameter, which is quite big and only 90 quid.....it can get really expensive....I asked the retailer and they told me to buy their 700 quid one.

Lol

I would not even try it.
Most likely the table uses a synchronous motor, the whole point of which is to turn at one speed, like a clock or turntable, and 'locks' itself to the mains frequency. To change the speed you need to alter the frequency.
Without knowing the internals of the fan controller, best assume it is a triac as Steve says. That just controls the voltage but cannot alter the frequency.

If you run around the table at a speed slightly less than the speed of the rotating table you should be able to get the desired effect. If Jonathan Ribee was still with us (I miss you JR) he'd be able to provide us with the maths.

When is JR coming back? I know he's having a holiday from loafing about here but I'm sure that when he has finished jollying around in Freda the 911 he'll come along for a chat. I had a 6 month holiday and came back, after all.
