Audio Technica Trade in Rate?

Mullardman

Moderately extreme...
Anybody know what AT would allow as trade in for an AT-33 PTG II ?

I have a dead one which presumably has a value as a trade in. But what's it worth?

Mull

Interesting Q. I also have an AT 33 PTG that is probably nearing the end of it's useful life and I was considering going with an Ortofon as I have Rondo Bronze with a broken cantilever kicking around somewhere that I was going to exchange. If I can get the AT exchanged, I will - it's a way, way better cart than the Ortofon.

Anyone have a link to the AT exchange policy or a list of participating dealers?

Apart from Ortofon, MC trade ins always used to be at dealers discretion. I've e mailed AT to if they have a company trade in policy akin to Ortofon's - but I suspect not.

Got an e mail back from Audio Technica. Might want to make this a sticky:

Moving coil cartridges replacement styli European program

Terms and conditions

The customer must return the old Audio-Technica moving coil cartridge to an Authorized Moving Coil Cartridge Service Centre along with proof of purchase.

The MC cartridge returned under the program must be outside of its warranty period, and be in working order (with the exception of a worn stylus) with no mechanical damage.

This program is available exclusively for customers in Europe. (For customers with damaged or broken cartridges, please contact your local Authorized Moving Coil Cartridge Service Centre for assistance)

Due to the technical nature and highly skilled construction involved in moving coil cartridges, it is notpossible to replace the stylus. Audio-Technica does not recommend having a moving coil cartridgere-tipped or repaired by any independent, unauthorized repair centre since the original performance and
optimal specifications can only be obtained when the complete cartridge is assembled and thoroughlytested by our skilled engineers at Audio-Technica’s specialist production facility in Japan.

Therefore Audio-Technica offers two comprehensive trade-in programs for its customers with moving coil cartridges with worn out styli. Under the first program, customers are able to trade-in their old cartridge for a brand new MC cartridge of the same model (or equivalent or lower priced), and under the
second program customers are able to take the opportunity to upgrade to a higher grade model.

I don't know where this leaves those of us that bought an AT33 PTG from Japan before they were available over here.

You can get them retipped by ESCO. I have it on very good authority that they were (and may still be) authorised AT service/repair agents. Following a woolly jumper incident I had a nearly new AT33PTG/2 retipped with a Paratrace stylus. I'm not sure if this would meet with AT's approval or how it compares with the original spec, but I don't really care as I think it sounds better! Certainly worth considering if you don't meet the AT trade in criteria.

I have no proof of purchase for my AT 33EV I got it years ago, I moved house in the last 2 years so there is no chance, cant even remember where I bought it, I am the only and original owner though.

When I had my Xerxes fixed I also asked the dealer to replace the OC9 that was fitted. He suggested a 33PTG and explicitly told me there was no longer a trade in programme, so I paid full price for the 33PTG. I never got my OC9 back. I can’t help wondering what happened to it. I also never received the box for the new cartridge, I suppose I should’ve be grateful there was a stylus guard.

Given that the transit bolts were also lost, and the arm needed new bearings -this after being told that the arm was proving difficult to rewire, I feel I ought to buy a barge pole.

At least it only took around 18 months from dropping off the turntable to getting it back!

Sorry for the rant.

Those trade in rates sound very generous to me. I suppose AT would prefer to take a reduced margin than lose a sale to a competitor manufacturer.

Dont blame you for ranting. I have been into HiFi since my early 20s I am now 65. I went through all the Linn Naim when we were all gung ho for the upgrades. Never got my Vallahla back, or my mm boards for the pre amp,as many didnt, think there were other odd bits as well. Years go by and then when you get older you think about this. The dealers make plenty on High End stuff and dont need to do this.
I gave up with Linn Naim after the Lingo, and Cirkus bearing, didnt think it was that great an upgrade for what I had spent. I have expensive kit now, but its once and for all system.
I remember when I sold my LP 12 and dismantled it under the instruction of the buyer to ship...and thinking "Where is the x thousand or whatever it was at the time, for this" I have had better deals and decks since, ny Orbe was better, then my Inspire Eclipse SE 12 which I still have was better than my Orbe, and now my Acoustic Signature Thunder better than them all, only in my opinion though, and I havent heard the up to date Linn.

I contacted audio technica UK about a trade in for my 33ev in 2015, I received a reply that stated they no longer did the trade in scheme.

I remember moving up from my first ever AT MC- an ATF5 in the late eighties. I was going to get the next one up until the shop let me hear an ART-1. When they offered a very generous trade in allowance, I could not say no.

That was direct to AT. I paid about £270 all in, including postage. It took about 2 months to send the cart back, get them to assess it and then get one from their warehouse to me in the UK.

I've sent my AT33EV back to audio technica two weeks ago, just have to wait now.
