Arcam Alpha plus CD player skipping

In yet another effort to downsize I've obtained an Arcam Alpha plus CD player.

Trouble is it skips on tracks near the start consistently (it was fine on demo of course...)

Is this likely to be a transport issue or would recapping help?

All looks ok inside as far as I can tell and the laser is free on its sled.

Any ideas?

The CDM4 is prone to skipping when the thrust pad of the pressing magnetic puck is worn.
Nothing final, replace with a custom one made of Teflon. Be careful not to lose the tiny ball!
Check that.
