Analogue to digital distortion

I am trying to play a turntable through XLPS phono stage into a cheapish analogue to digital convertor and then through a toslink cable into a pair of Devialet phantoms. The digital source is recognised by the speaker software. When first playing it works fine for about ten seconds then distorts for a few seconds and then plays fine for a few seconds and so on.

Any ideas chaps?

does the distortion correlate to loud bits in the music? Just wondering if the gain is too high into the ADC, in which case it may be clipping the tops of the waves ...

Not really although you may be on the right track. The phono stage doesn't have any adjustment though. I am using a MM by the way.

I wonder if the MM/MC selector isn't working and it's stuck on MC (or something like that) , although I would have thought in that case the overload would be obvious.
