Amphion speakers

Stop it!! This amounts to speaker-porn. Having a threesome in your listening room!! Indeed!!

You'll love the 1's, Phil. Their super-dynamic performance belies their size.

Thanks , so far they pass the test for my hypersensitive ears in a bright room . Very forgiving and they sure do like class A !!!

fantastic, pleased to hear !!! Played AIR pocket symphony and that was quite an experience . well recorded stuff sounds superb . been playing with positioning . as far as i can see they dont seem to need toe in. firing straight ahead is good , quite close together . excellent soundstage and as mentioned the class A monoblocks give much better soundstage . I must pop down and listen to the supernait 2 with the 3s . i think that would be a very good match as the top end is smooth but still very dynamic and the prat of the naim would bring them alive

My amphion argon1 tweeter just went silent. Most likely blown. I didn't even play them at loud levels. I did a search and it seems like it is a problem amongst some owners as well. Anyone has anything to share?

Sorry to hear that , they use them a great deal in pro audio for studio use so I would have thought they were reliable . Spoke to dealer and not had one fail yet

Could you share any links where this problem has occurred, as it would be interesting to bottom this out? I've searched high and low and I just can't find any reference to this problem whatsoever.

How's it going with the 1's, @hifinutt ?

My 3's have landed. I was expecting that period of burn-in may be required, but they already sound sublime.....even better than the loan pair IMHO. I'll be doing some serious listening during the festive break!

I believe the 3's were voted product of the year by "A British Audiophile" on his YouTube channel.

There is not much about the floorstanding 3LS speakers anywhere other than a maybe overly enthusiastic review by (I think) Steve Guttenberg on YouTube.

As far as I know, there is only one dealer in the West Midlands (The Little Audio Co) so I may be visiting there when all calms down to compare to my Sonus Fabers.

And quite incredibly there is a sonus Faber dealer about 100 yards from the little audio co !! Above the most comprehensive whisky store ever !! I was there last week and they have unbelievable amount of Macintosh gear as well as avantgarde and sonus Faber. So one could do 2 demos of amphion and sonus Faber in one day

I would like to hear the 3ls floorstanders too
I notice that the 3s are very engaging with the 25 watt monoblocks but the bass is not so seismic as the arcam with more power

I was playing a few tracks with deep bass to compare . Next week I hope to try some more powerful class d monoblocks with 3s .I anticipate a brighter sound with more dynamics and bass but brighter is not better for me in this room . !!

There is also a brand of amp called the moonriver which may well be good to try

What sonus Faber do you have ?

Gearspace (formerly gearslut) has some instances where users encounter a few blown tweeters. I believe the tweeter they use is the same as those in argon.

I understand with so many sold, it is inevitable that there are some that are blown. The weird thing about my issue is that, when I brought it to the dealer, the issue can't be replicated. The tweeter is magically OK again and now I'm enjoying the speakers again.

I don't want to discuss about what may have happened to the speakers but just trust me that I have done everything to be sure that the tweeter issue is indeed the issue of the tweeter.

I have Olympica 1 stand-mounts bought just before the covid era. Lovely speakers - refined and detailed - but I went from Naim SL2's which in retrospect was a hurried decision based upon converting my garage to a listening room. The conversion has still not taken place.

The Moonriver unit has received glowing praise in the press but is not on my list whereas the Hegel / Amphion combo seems to be highly regarded and often demo'd at shows. I know of the other shop to which you refer but that just throws another cult brand into the mix and I had enough of that with Naim over the years!

Yes I had in mind the moonriver to try with the 93db taus . As you say Hegel and amphion seem to have a synergy and last time I heard a 120 with argon 1 it was delightful.
Hopefully you can get a home demo of the 3s . That's the best way to compare to the sonus

So added in icepower asx 50 monoblocks with the bel canto pre . I think these 3s need a bit more welly maybe
These asx came from a chap who used them with Jordan single driver speakers
They vere towards the warm side with tannoy Eaton legacy

With the amphion they sound absolutely superb, very engaging indeed. Lovely timbre with no fatigue whatsoever. Playing various electronic music and pain they are very realistic. Real grip on the bass and with diamond mine it makes the floor vibrate . Of the class ab, class a and class d amps i have used so far i would say rather surprisingly that the class d here are the best sounding .

As a footnote, can anyone identify that album cover in the first picture at the top of the thread? I really enjoyed hearing snippets of that at Daventry but forgot to take a note of it.

Hi,
Not sure if anyone has replied to your query yet, if so I apologise for the redundancy. The album in question is called "Liberty" by an artist known as Annette Askvik. It is used to demonstrate very high end equipment at a lot of US hifi shows.
Usually to show off Borresen Speakers and AAvik amplifiers which have really high prices.
It is a very good album if you like that kind of female vocal ethereal sound. It does sound great through my system and I do use it to test prospective new purchases. Highly recommended.
