Having owned passive Kabers back in the late 80's I fancy trying out some active ones. I would like to use my existing amps rather than Linn or Naim. Can I use a tunebox (not sure this is the correct name) with cards inside or do I have to go down the Linn/Naim route? Are there any other methods?

Yep, you can use a Tunebox - I did this when I was in the middle of changing power amps. There's also a creature known as a 'Kaber Aktiv Crossover' which is a dedicated Kaber active crossover, available before the Tunebox existed, I think - the Tunebox is an empty box with a power supply, awaiting six mono 'Aktiv' cards, although you may find a Tunebox complete with Kaber cards if you search around a bit.
