A thread to recommend decent movies on Netflix / Amazon Prime?

No need for a TV License if you don't watch or record a live broadcast, so cancelling License and using Netflix leaves plenty of change in the pocket :)

For me Netflix is about the TV content, not the movies.
You are right there. Unless you have endless hours for US 'boxed sets', the movie choice is lacking, and will get worse now a deal with some studios has finished or due to finish. I cancelled my Netflix earlier this month, and now just use Amazon on a pay as you watch basis. Like Blockbuster, without the travel to the shop.
Having said that, before I cancelled, I watched 'What we did on our holidays', which I thought was pretty good. Early on, it was easy to spot that it was written by those responsible for 'Outnumbered'.

A while back I got a good way through Fargo, enjoyed it at first but gradually lost interest.

No not being ironic, but I find myself in same position as you wading through for 20 minutes then giving up - hence the thread there must be some good stuff across the 2 providers.

I tend to like:

Good sci-fi (but I don't think they make it anymore?) Blade Runner, Alien, 2001, The empire strikes back etc

All the usual stuff in no particular order and off the top of my head - Fargo, Casino, Goodfellows, LA Confidential, Lawrence of Arabia, Apocalypse Now, Annie Hall, Manhattan, The Road, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Schindler’s List, Close Encounters of the third kind, Crimes and Misdemeanors, The Godfather, The Apartment, Schindlers List, The Dark Knight, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Some like it hot, Pulp fiction, lots of others!
The only thing I can think of that might appeal is Sabotage, featuring a really old and haggard Schwarzenegger. Nasty and brutal, but the best he's done for ages.
And just to test your water - so to speak - in the completely opposite direction ; try 'Priceless' (or 'hors de prix') , a truly delightful slice of French whimsy.
Nicholas.

I watched Black Book last night and it's a great film about NAZI occupation of Holland and the lead actress was superb.

Cheers, I will check that out - we watched Drive last night with Ryan Gosling, violence was way too graphic for my taste.

Just noticed North Face is available on Amazon Prime, I own on blu ray. Now this is a film well worth watching.

If you havent seen it? I can recommend Flame and Citron (Netflix), story about Danish resistance in World War II

Yes, Black Book is excellent.

A good Danish one is Flame and Citron, but I don't know if Netflix have it. Seek it anyway.

edit ; lol beaten to it I see above and that they do have it.

Overdosed on 'Narcos'. Started on one episode a night, then found I was up to three a night in no time.
Separately, I see 'El Chapo' sustained facial injuries during a failed recapture. I imagine someone is going to pay dearly for that...

Mr Robot impressed me, although I'm told it doesn't hold it's grip all the way through the series, seems pretty impressive after the first episode. It's about a drug addled hacker taking on an evil corporation that is equated with Apple.

Good documentary on Netflix by PBS, called First Air War.

Shows a team in New Zealand who built as exactly as they could, using techniques of the day, various WW1 aircraft. They tested one against the other of each generation of aircraft. They saw how technology and operating techniques advanced incrementally.

It is a very interesting documentary and well shot.

Documentaries are actually one the better things about Netflix. Search around - there are some stonkers.

Two good films we watched...."In Order of Dissappearance" Scandi-noir film, the guy from the killing, the one with the removal company, and "Mystery Road" an ozzy detective film, very like True Detective.
