A thread to catalogue the eloquence, dignity, diplomacy and wisdom of Boris Johnson: V Gone-ish!

Suella Braverman had me shouting at the radio driving in to work this morning. She wants the PM gig and basically said that she would be leading the Conservatives as a fascist party. Not in those exact words, but she said she'd had enough of all this 'woke' business. As 'woke' means anti-fascist, anti-racist and aware of and trying to fix social injustices, she basically admitted live on the Today programme that the Tories are far-right extremists.

Relax. Not only is she nuts and quite probably corrupt (as an AG supporting law breaking), can you really see the UKIP base (formally known as Tory activists) supporting her? Or Patel, Zahawi, Sunak, or the Saj.....for that matter.

They didn't vote Brexit in order to ....cont p94.

It will be either Wallace (bit suspect on Brexit though), Daunting Penny or the Truss!

A pointless gesture. However many Tory MPs want Boris out of Downing Street, they are not going to vote against their own government on a confidence vote called by the Leader of the Opposition.

In recent years we have seen the rise in populism, where it's become harder to distinguish truth from lies so crackpot conspiracy theories become mainstream, where 'people have had enough of experts', there's a rise of hate- and fear-fuelled rhetoric, where societies become divided, people are swayed by demagogues; lies, corruption and cheating can be committed apparently without consequence, people en masse vote for stupidity and destructive policies, xenophobia, racism and the far-right are on the rise everywhere, and the so-called opposition are missing in action.

How does it feel knowing you're emboldening and enabling that Ponty? Does it feel good? Are you pleased with yourself?

Not a fan of Sir Graham presumably? I’m not a current fan of the Johnson and glad he’s going but couldn’t possibly have voted for Corbyn at a GE (or labour for that matter). Circa 14M others essentially agreed.

My first thought also... interesting to see if any tories vote with Labour on it though!

I dunno, it could be quite amusing to see all the Tory MPs, including the 50+ that just bunged in resignation letters, rush to assure Johnson of their steadfast confidence.

Whilst circa 38m didn't. Change needed.

There are a few more twists and turns until the greased piglet is finally on the spit. And even then I would be keeping a watchful eye.

Which is the problem really -- minority government is one thing when there is some sort of consensus but when the minority part goes off the deep end it's deeply dangerous.

In which case voting should be compulsory. Can’t help it if people can’t be arsed. When you think the countries where people have to fight for the right to vote it does make you wonder.

Disagree, this would be a win win for the opposition. Either they get to bring down the government or they force Tory MPs to further debase themselves by supporting the ongoing train wreck.

By your own account you live in a ‘safe’ seat. Millions don’t vote as they fully grasp doing so is a waste of their time and an insult to their intelligence. If you want compulsory voting you first certainly need to offer representation for that vote.

The problem is not with people not voting, it's our screwy electoral system that allows minority groups to elect radical governments. Johnson was right about one thing, in that if the majority parties ever got their act together they could pass electoral reform that would put the Tories out of power for a generation.

Except, of course it wouldn't put them out of power but rather force them not to be such a far right party with policies like sending refugees to Rwanda.
