A Thread for New Jazz

We had Maciek plus his group playing at my local Jazz club a couple of weeks ago, playing to a small group of 30-40 very enthusiastic people, brilliant evening and only cost £7. Last week we had Jason Rebello, Keyboard player with Jeff Beck and Sting, doing a solo jazz piano evening, another brilliant evening.

Sounds great! I'm lucky to have the venue that hosts Sheffield Jazz just two minutes walk away. I'll email the organisers and suggest they book Maciek as he'd be perfect in that setting.

A few of my current favorites...

GoGo Penguin
Polar Bear
Acoustic Ladyland
Sons of Kemet
Portico Quartet/Portico
Get the Blessing
Led Bib
Neil Cowley Trio
Esbjorn Svensson Trio
BADBADNOTGOOD

...:)

For me, current jazz builds on the tradition - it's not museum music and, as I said above, the new stuff gets played even more than the archive. Labels like Pi and ACT have lots of good records but , other than this, it's not always easy to find anew stuff and I tend to catch up via end of year articles - hence the thread

Building on the tradition is 'Illusion' by the Eero Koivistoinen Quartet, recently released on Svart. It's the last session recorded at the M1 studio of YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company) during November 2015. Easy listening straight ahead moderny stuff - perfect for me :)

You might like to check out Slowly Rolling Camera (great band name at least) and Mammal Hands.

A few things have rung my bell recently.

Nicole Mitchell -Mandorla Awakening II: Emerging Worlds
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B06Y4HJWV7/?tag=pinkfishmedia-21
A very interesting mix of avantgarde, jazz and Blues - in Places like the Art Ensemble, at others like the Last Poets

Jaimie Branch: Fly or Die
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B06XKPCT5P/?tag=pinkfishmedia-21

Fly or Die delivers everything Polar Bear have tried to do in a concise 35 minutes.

I a mellower mode, Anouar Brahem's Blue Maqams
https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_s...l=search-alias=aps&field-keywords=blue+maqams

All on Spotify if you fancy a dip in.

Some great suggestions here.

I’d add Ruby Rushton to the great stuff coming out of S London.

And I’ve not seen mention of Ibrahim Maalouf - Wind is a great record.

New Gogo Penguin LP next week (couple of tracks that are out already sound superb) plus a welcome vinyl reissue of V2.0. Plus they’re touring this week - well worth seeing if you can.

Good to find some like minded souls where new jazz is concerned.

Off to see what Kamaal Williams is up to now that Yussef Kamaal is no more at Village Underground (shit PA tho) on 22nd of next month.

Some individuals not already mentioned that I think are worthy of note: Zara Macfarlane, Nubya Garcia, Joe Armon Jones & Maxwell Owins, Chip Wickham, Vels Trio, Collocutor and Penya.

New Kamasi Washington record 'Heaven and Earth' is available to pre-order for June.

A 2xCD 4xLP concept album monster - the sleeve shows him walking on water!

I'm looking forward to the new Kamasi Washington album, I have tickets to see him play in Glasgow next month so I expect he'll be playing some songs from the new album.
The new GoGo Penguin album is excellent, by the way! (I'll be seeing them live in November)

If you're into piano trio's Investigations by the Pablo Held Trio is good.

If you like a bit more sonic experimentation in a jazz context check out Elliot Galvin. Albums Punch and the Influencing Machine are pretty good.

And there's a new Lauren Jard/Dinosaur album due very soon. The last one was excellent.

Finally, if you want to venture a little or a lot off piste Cafe Oto offer a wide range of improv on vinyl, cd and download. Along with many live events featuring some of the leading and more obscure non mainstream performers.

For new jazz in an older style I've been playing this a lot this week:

Joe Lovano and Dave Douglas in a band inspired by Wayne Shorter - including a couple of Shorter tunes from the 60s. Joey Baron on drums which is always a good thing

I've also been playing this a lot:

A fusion of Arabic modes and western jazz - a knottier, less melodic blend than on the Anouar Braham records.
