As Les W has pointed out previously, that may leave leave you operating right down at the bottom of the volume control but ........... It was fine with my 42, the volume is normally between 10 and 12 o'clock with normal speakers.
I did the links because I have fitted a headphone socket on my 42 direct from the line stage so I was keen not to lose any gain. I use Sennheiser HD600 and it works great.....
I had a Nac 32-5 with links in place of the balance and a DACT 24 step control and it all worked perfectly. You may have something connected incorrectly as mine went a bit like yours until I played with the conections.
There is a mod kit for the DACT which gives a slower rate of increase in volume. It consists of SMD resistors which you have to piggy-back onto the pot with some careful soldering. It did the trick when I used a DACT in a 62.
I think it is called a CT1-mod1; suggest you e-mail DACT for more info.
