40D / Sigma problem

A client has a problem with his kit.

He has a Canon 40D and a Sigma 300m F4 with HSM motor and some sort of special glass (UF, chromo abberation or something like that). Quite decent kit I would imagine. The Sigma has an EOS fitting and is a late 90s vintage.

When he attaches his Sigma to his Canon he gets a 'does not communicate' type error message.

Does anyone have any ideas what this might be? It should all work nicely, but just isn't having it.

Unfortunately this is all the detail that I have, but I can ask more specific questions if you tell me what to ask.

the lens will only work with eos film cameras

Yeah, there are some known incompatabilities with older Sigma lenses. If you talk to Sigma they can often upgrade their early HSM lenses to make them compatible. I got a Sigma 70-200 F2.8 HSM lens upgraded to work with my 10D (it previously worked fine on an Eos 1). Can't remember how much it cost, but it was something like £50.
