Not always - it depends how bad the official product is. The various Dr Ebbetts Beatles CDs were a (largely successful) attempt to produce something better than the 'real' CDs and were only bettered by the recent mono box (or so I'm led to believe by people who've spent a lot of time listening to the Beatles!)
 
Much like in the '90's when the shops were flooded with 99p copies of classic paperbacks the discerning buyer has the old adage of buy cheap buy twice in their mind.
The problem with records is that you don't get to hear what it sounds like until you get it home.
