Audio Forums

I was on HUG when I owned Harbeths and enjoyed it.
Later, after contributing to a discussion on the modern LS3/5As, I was challenged in a PM by Alan Shaw.
The content of the message claimed my input wasn’t accurate.
As it came from the manufacturer of the modern LS3/5As, I knew it was.
Alan Shaw refused to accept it.
I subsequently left HUG, never to return.

Lordy me HUG is the dullest forum on the internet ! Duller than the dullest of places :p

OP. Just in case, whatever you do, don't ask about cables on Audio Science Review !
I love Audio Science Review, its another world. One guy was daft enough to ask what a reviewed item actually sounded like last week. He received quite a few sarcastic replies which mostly denounced him as an audiophile "..there's always one" was one comment.
After all, everyone knows the numbers tell your ears everything they need to know.

Mainly here but sometimes pop over to the wam, nice friendly people there who are very helpful.

I stopped posting there when reports came in about problems with the Topping PA5 amplifier, people reporting the issues were constantly under suspicion as anti Topping trolls. Fanbois being fanbois they blamed users for blowing the amps up and demanded serial no.s from the users reporting issues. Some even ordered two so if one failed they’d still have another:eek:
They also banned me for a month when a mod was allowing members to troll a manufacturer who signed up to say hello and answer questions about their product.:(

Unfortunately, I have a different experience.
One of my cable search topics turned into a real show. I don't want to go into the details of that filthy thread, but there were some extremely aggressive statements and recommendations from Steve about using toilet paper for a tweeter instead of a warm sounding cable. The thread was deleted.
My experience I wasn't expecting to get there.

I find this difficult to reconcile with my experience there. I know Steve has endorsed cable brands in the past, Morrow Cable comes to mind.

Been here 18.5 years now. Also a Wam member. It used to be fun over there, provided you had a thick skin, but I baled out after the first change of owner. It seems to have changed hands again and has improved significantly recently(and the WAM shows are a hoot).

Also an AOS member, but the place seems moribund now.

I'd like to make a more general point about all forums. The problem I've found is that I'm not a writer. Getting your meaning across with just bare words is a skill by itself and involves a lot of self-editing, careful choice of words etc., which is too much of a pain to do for something which is just casual.

Add in people who are bored and just stirring, or are posting while pissed, or get really angry (like I do) and it's a miracle that forums work at all.

Another problem is when you start a thread yourself. You feel that it's your baby and get wound up when someone casually bounces it completely off-topic when you were looking forward to everyone agreeing with your carefully chosen words of wisdom :)

Was on WHS&V again for a few month after years of absence. Some nice folks there but it's pretty boring so I've gone absent again for the next 5 years.

One forum at a time is more than enough for me. I have a life.

Here now til I get barred again :)

Just remembered, I (think) I am a member of the Wam but can't be bothered ... at least not whilst here.
The Wam is very right wing

hahahaha the socialists worker forum is right wing compared to the off topic area here.
Not at all. Off topic here is for normal people with a balanced perspective on politics, it is mostly characterised by centrists. The problem is that the Overton window has shifted to the right so much that even centrists appear hard left to right wingers.

By exception/ individual or amongst a significant number of actual posters?

To regard it as 'very right wing' I think you have to be looking through the lens of being almost at the opposite end of the spectrum.

I would describe myself as centre to mid left and I just can't see what you're describing.

pfm is moderated very hard against racism, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny, nationalism, xenophobia etc, so some bigots/idiots will view it as left wing or even “woke” in the language of the modern far-right. It is what it has always been and it will certainly never change.

I've just liked tubes comment so i see that places me in the Idiot or Bigot group.
Odd since I'm neither.
FWIW, IIRC, KS was told to get stuffed on the wam at around the time of the Queens death, whilst posting some comments which aroused the wrath of the Mods there? (No doubt he will remember more clearly than I).
I'm not sure exactly how I'd want to define 'good' in the world, but I think kindness, consideration, a reluctance to judge others, tolerance, care and inclusion would make my list far higher than Tony's moderation principles. (I try and fail to be that man), Being flawed is who we are as humans.

Maybe those things go without saying here? I'd hope so anyway,

I hope so, and to my mind as someone who runs a large community the principles I highlight are just kindness and respect, yet I suspect you’d be astonished and horrified if you saw some of the racism, homophobia and bigotry I’ve had to remove from this site over the years.

My political centre is very much human rights, civil liberties etc. I have always been determined to make pfm a welcoming and safe space. That’s all I’m trying to do.
