Car Break In

It's very rare to see a Range Rover parked in London without an aftermarket steering lock on it. A contractor I know looked out of an office window to see the contents of his Transit being loaded into anther one.

Cheers BB

Yeah I have three second hold but it doesn’t then work from there on out, no doubt it’s a subscription option knowing bmw
You either have self-folding mirrors or you don't. If you do, they respond to a 3s hold on the fob when locking. They unfolded when the car is unlocked. If they don't, your car is faulty. There's no subscription for folding mirrors.

I thought on a BMW:

  • mirrors optional extra
  • folding mirrors additional option
  • motorised folding mirrors additional option
  • enable the software to operate the folding an extra charge
  • ongoing subscription for the ongoing operation an extra per annum charge

Yes I do, they don't automatically fold when the car is locked, they should that should be a no brainer, but in BMW world you have to hold the lock button for the mirrors to fold. Bbuuuuttt, that has to be done every time for me, it does not remember it the next time.

When we got the new car last year, first thing I did was buy a couple of these.

Bizarre solution to a problem that shouldn't exist. My car has a normal keyfob, I lock the car and unless someone pushes the button the car stays locked. Without the key in the ignition, the car won't start. So I'm hugely inconvenience d by having to push a button to open the door and by having to put the key in the dash. Conversely my neighbour with his new Range Rover has a keyless system, he has to keep his key in a special wallet and put a mechanical lock on the wheel. If that's progress, my cocks a kipper.

I see. Same goes for auto stop/start, which I have to disable every time I start the car. It should remember my preference, but it doesn't. I'm sure there's a coding routine that could be done to make it so, but it's really a very minor inconvenience in the grand scheme of things.

You forgot:
  • heated mirrors
  • auto-dimming
  • auto-dipping kerb-side when reversing
I didn't pay any extras for all that.

The auto dipping kerb side mirror is an extra on the 2013 BMW 5 series, I know because my dad has one without it. It can't be activated, at least not by the owner, because it's not fitted or enabled.

My 2013 335i has it as standard. It is dependent on whether the mirror adjustment switch is set L or R. It doesn't auto-dip on the L-setting.

I find that one of the most useful features on any car. I have yet to scratch my rims in nearly 10 years of ownership.

If you have electric mirrors and seats it can be activated. You need some software and OBDII lead.

Its neither here nor there for subscriptions for me, BMW being BMW did not have foresight, so now 3G is terminating, I am goosed, no more subscriptions. My official BMW dealer didn't even know what I was on about when I enquired if I could get a 4G sim, eventually a 'master technician' said it was not a sim as such but a soldered part, so no more subscriptions.

Shite.

Depending on age of the BMW, auto fold can easily be enabled / disabled in iDrive, just a tick in a box.
No subscription.
Dipping of nearside mirror is enabled via the set button on drivers armrest to active or not
No, the armrest is not an optional extra.

On my car you have to fold the mirrors manually. I simply fold them in so thieves assume it is locked.
Also in my almost 10 years of driving I have so badly scuffed the wheels that no one wants it anyhow.

That's useful to know, thanks. I'll let him know and when he next gets it serviced at his local specialist he can get it switched on, I'm sure they won't charge a hill of money.

So that they don't get knocked off when a cyclist or motorist passes by too closely. They aren't cheap to replace.

And if they have lights in they can be an MOT failure; £60 per side for my Suzuki when they eventually arrive from Germany.

On main car short push on the button locks then long push does auto close for windows and roof plus mirror fold.

In the summer i always leave the windows a touch open to air the interior.

I've had 26 cars during 46 years. Never happened. I would argue the opposite then, put on big extra mirrors used when towing caravans. That will keep them away from my car. Maybe even keep people from parking to near me and then throwing the door right into my car.

Same here (also 2013). It's just routine for me to simply hit the button after starting the car. I don't even think about it. I have the auto-dip function also, but rarely need to use it.
