when did it become acceptable to bring your dog into a shop

Why? Do we all have to like dogs? Personally I'm fed up with dog shit all over the place and the strong smell of piss on every street corner last summer. Personally I think there's too many these days, around here anyway. Maybe a dog tax to help pay for the regular clean up operation that's required.
Or maybe just people with a sense of humour?

I reckon the world would be better if dog haters stayed at home instead

Hmmm, I think we need a sense of balance and tolerance here. People need to accept that not everyone likes or wants the same thing. I don't mind dogs being anywhere if they are well trained, but then to be brutally honest I'm the same about kids... unruly kids makes me feel enormous animosity towards the parents, but... well it's just not worth it... I just move on. A dog in a shop is hardly a major problem and if someone really does not like it they can go elsewhere or come back later... it's not like every shop has a pack of dogs running round it all day. At the end of the day dogs can't be left in cars (obviously) or tethered outside shops (thanks to the society we live in) so what choice do people have? We all just need to learn to stop being so intolerant IMO.

P.S. I'm a cat person... a far easier 'ownership' experience :D

Where we live there are very, very many dogs. Some observations;

There are far too many dogs in the UK. They seem to have become a fashion accessory for many.

Many seem to pay hundreds to buy a dog and then spend well in to an annual 4 figs on the cost of ownership, but then plead poverty.

Poor dog behaviour is 99% down to lack of training and ignorant owners.

I don't have a problem with dogs in shops, or elsewhere, if well.behaved. Indeed, I'd rather the dogs than many of the humans.

Having said the above, we both love dogs! They seem to have an affinity for me and thay all come up to say hello; even the unruly ones settle down when I make a fuss of them. We would like a dog but, for the present, it's not practical and would be unfair on a dog.

I can't actually recall noticing a dog in a shop recently (excluding cafes and pubs), but I do feel there are too many dogs in the UK. I'm not sure we'll have another after our current faithful friend.

Estimated number of dogs in the UK is now somewhere around 13 million and nearly the same number of cats. Seems a lot.

I have no feeling as to whether there are too many dogs in the UK. I don't think we would have one, cats are way more interesting (they control the internet didn't you know).

Dogs in pubs and shops are no problem to me so long as they the well behaved - bit like children really.

Leaving a dog in a car to me is similar to leaving a child in a car - unforgivable.

I had long intended to get one but put off in large part by the sheer number of dogs now. It was obvious who had bought them during lockdown - the owner standing not far from their flat, bored, looking at their phone, waiting for it to drop one then go back in and my are the pavements covered in it.
R4 had a good programme describing the epidemic of abandoned dogs, many with behavioural issues. Dodgy breeders and uncommitted buyers.

You can spot the ‘covid dogs’ straight away. Unsocialised and untrained. Bizarre in some ways as people had time to train them. I don’t understand people who have dogs and don’t have the time nor live in the right environment for them, it’s ridiculous and cruel on the dog. Look at the cases where dogs maul kids to death etc, always the wrong dog in the wrong hands. As for the cost, very expensive even without an unexpected vet bill. Like running another car really. It’s the same as kids, lots of people shouldn’t have them.

Since retiring 2 years ago and having our 1st dog 3 years I cannot express what happiness she has brought into our lives. She gets you out of bed and helps you explore the countryside with never a dull moment, we tend to leave her at home for shopping but when she does she’s always well dehaved, just wish people were more tolerant.
