Speakers to suit Naim Nait 2

I'm going to give what is turning into my stock response to these kind of threads - where are you? Maybe there are some localish forumites who can come round with different amps/speakers and have a play for a day with tea and cake?

Stratford-upon-Avon, and that would be great.

Oooouuufffff!!!!!
I paid $280.00 CDN dollars back in the 80's for a Nait 1, should have kept it for resale today.
Anyhow, I have 2 NAP 110 with after market boards that really stopped my upgraditis so I 'm good.
Buying a Nait 1 or 2 would be more nostalgia driven than anything else.

£40 For a Nait 1 in '98

I’d also be half tempted to try the sonneteer alabaster for sale on hifiwigwam, see if that wakes the falcons up a bit

Have you been into Music Matters?

They regularly have ex-demo speakers and a pair of NEATS would work well with your amp.

I haven't really been in to the one in Stratford it looks a bit showy and AV focused from the outside. I did used to go into the Birmingham one in the past.

I use the one in Leamington and very helpful and do home demos.

Surely worth popping into as it’s your most local dealer that specialises in high end gear.

A quick google search shows they’ve have 5 pairs of ex-demo NEAT speakers that pair very well with NAIM amps.

Thanks for your advice, I will.if I was to change the speakers rather than the amp I'd be limited to what I could sell the Falcons for which I guess would be around £1300.

I never was in the Stratford shop myself but when I lived in Wellesbourne I did make a couple of purchases in the Leam shop, perhaps not the biggest selection of hifi but really nice bloke, very accommodating and easy to deal with.

Do you happen to know if they do home demos?

I lived very happily with my CB Nait 2 and Guru Juniors. It was the happiest of times ‘with jam to lace the bread’. The nostalgia cloud eventually lifted and the amp’s limitations were all too apparent (it took a while!). I moved on to a better shoebox amp that cost a lot more.

Give Tom Tom a call they have some new old stock in their warehouse (well they did when I replaced the ones I stupidly sold).

But no point going to Leam if Stratford store is on your doorstep. I believe they can xfer stock between stores too.

I would have thought so, I just never went into Stratford alot as the record shop was in Leam .

I never asked about a home demo as I was happy enough to just buy an 'entry level' Rega amp and TT.
I did call in one Saturday morning to get a digital cable to connect the bluray player I'd got for Xmas to the TV , the guy asked did I want to hear it and give me a quick dem upstairs on their home theatre system, it was pretty impressive, he did ask how I was getting on with the Rega stuff I'd bought the year before and chatted about music, etc, I thought he was a genuinely nice bloke and not at all pushy.

I think my dilemma boils down to this.

Although capable of beautiful moments, the Nait 2 doesn't consistently gel with Facons - it's very track--dependent.

So it's a decision as to whether it's best to replace the 15w amp or the 82db sensitivity speakers.

The room is 24 x 12 feet with a 7ft6 ceiling and it is carrpeted and has soft furnishings

I used to run my Musical Fidelity MC4s with an A&R Cambridge A60, a Naim Nait 2 and Naim Nait 3 back in the early 1990s, all to good effect.

I have had the the MC4s up for grabs here for some weeks now, for a ridiculously low £45.

If you’re ever down my way (South Wales and Bristol) you’d be welcome to borrow them and see how you get on. You might be pleasantly surprised and have a lot of funds left to buy other things!

It’s far easier to replace the amp as you know the speakers have the ability to work in the room. Loads of good integrated amps out there.

Are you using Naim speaker cable BTW?

Thanks for the kind offer but I'm in Warwickshire.

I realise you’ve previously had a Rega amp.
But if you get to the point of deciding it’s the amp to be changed and not the Falcons then by all means give me a shout if you’d like to.
There is a (current version) Rega Brio in the house - owned by my partner - waiting to be sold following the purchase of a hybrid valve/mosfet amp.
The reason it’s not been snapped up is nothing to do with price but the fact that it’s collection only.
I’m aware that this is a step down from your Elicit but if previous comments on thread which say even the IO can drive Falcons is correct, then the higher powered Brio should do fine, too (I’m making assumptions here).
It’s been driving sealed box Ditton 44s (12inch woofers) with ease and several Castle speakers have also caused it no issues.
Not too far away from you.
Good luck with whatever you decide.
