The watch thread: pocket, wrist, sporty, showy? You name it!

Just bought one of these at Argos with my Nectar points. Getting a simple watch with tide and moon display seems to be quite difficult. My last Casio is still going, but the strap failed after 30 years, and seems impossible to replace. I drilled a hole in what remained of the case, and tied it to my buoyancy aid just in case

All that and a 10 year battery with change from £30? Wow.

I bought a Casio F91-W today for under a tenner just because I thought it was so uncool it is cool. Design unchanged since 1994. Takes me back to my younger years.
My usual wearers are an Omega 2254.50, Casio Protrek or solar/atomic Gshock.

i love these watches but last time they couldnt get a decent strap to fit it so i had to buy a more expensive digital watch [ AX i think]

That’s an impressive watch. Judging by the photos, it morphs into an analog display when you put it in the box!

I had one in the 90s, the straps break after a few months' use and as you say they aren't replaceable with anything decent.
Luckily plenty of straps on eBay, Amazon etc for a few quid nowadays. Replacements appear to be adequate quality (well, there's not much to live up to!)

Since you asked...

Even if you are a fan of aviation/military themed watches, I am not sure why any one would buy one of these AVI watches. There is nothing wrong with the movement - the Miyota is a cheap but decent and reliable movement from Citizen. But as has been said, military watches have to be very legible and utilitarian however this particular watch seems to be very cluttered, with a confusing layout and full of superfluous markings. It is a poorly designed dial and looks pretty bad. It is also overpriced for what it is. Personally I would not buy it.

'Military style' watches (as opposed to issued military watches) are a favorite design theme. I'd suggest any of the following, both far cheaper than the AVI (and IMO better) :

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B096G3F5YL/?tag=pinkfishmedia-21

For something probably even better and just slightly more expensive than the AVI, this Hamilton is rather nice. The movement is superior.

I'm glad we're all different. I don't like any of those :)

As it's been rather warm I've switched my trusty Casio to a nato strap.

I know it's in questionable taste but I plumped for the 'Bond' colourway - I rather like how it looks against the black face and bezel.

That's a remarkably Rolex-like Casio Paul - especially with that strap. What model is it ?

Not bad. Reminds me of my Christopher Ward Trident.
Which reminds me - Christopher Ward bought the Trident brand name a few years back, but I have one of the originals from around 1973. It was a lower-tier British brand IIRC, somewhere above Timex and Accurist, but not what you'd call posh. I can't find much about it at all but it was my first 'proper' watch, 25 jewel automatic, Incabloc, all that stuff. I found it in the loft at my parents' house last summer, while helping to clear out prior to moving them out. It still runs, but the crown has broken so it can't be adjusted or wound and it needs a good fettling. I'm sure it's not worth much, but I'd like to get it usable again, so a service and a new strap at some point. I approached a couple of the watch wranglers recommended on this thread, who turned their noses up, or wouldn't talk to me until I told them what the movement was and I don't have the tool to remove the back so I have no idea.
