Things to see in Dorset…

JTC

PFM Villager...
Any recommendations for things to do in Dorset? I’m taking my eldest to the Tank museum at Bovington next week. We’ll be in the area three nights, looking for somewhere pretty to walk that we can park the van near and that’s got a decent chippy nearby :). Also any other ‘must see’ things for a 15-yo obsessed with militaria!!!

Not military, but Monkey World is close to the Tank Museum.

Corfe Castle is a good visit, with a Museum of Torture in the village that appeals to most 15 yo’s. Coming back from the castle there is the Blue Pool, an old clay pit that reflects light to give a vibrant cobalt blue colour

The legend that is the "Swanage Badger" rumoured to be the size of a Shetland pony and has a taste for pitbulls. Ask around the Swanage area about it?

If the weather is good, less than 5m from Corfe is Studland bay - a glorious white sand beach, great for a long walk, a day chilling, and amazingly - it's utterly free of the crowds from Bournemouth across the bay*. park at Middle Beach (national trust members park free) The bay whole faces east, which is nice - as a reuslt the clear water in the bay is generally flat calm, the sun behind you / easy to find dappled shade to enjoy a day from. there are a couple of decent cafes along it, too.

Just to the south, plenty of empty, interesting/empty/stony beaches around Kimmeridge. Even the odd 'nodding donkey' - yes its one of UK's oldest still in use oilfields, running over 60yrs.

An Ancient Swannery, at Abbotsbury. Other interest, inc old garrison etc at Portland Bill - take a walk along Chesil beach.

Gorgeous scenery, empty byways to drive through and enjoy the scenery, a great view above all from the Hardy Monument ... Lots and lots of good by-the-way stuff to discover for yourself. Take the B-roads; enjoy the journey.

(and yes - the Tank Museum is excellent; don't rush it.)

PS on fish & chips - Lulworth not good. The 'Harbour Lights' stand right nr the seafront at West Bay is the place to go.

(* Though you can take the chain ferry across if you must see how awful Sandbanks etc really is.)

Royal Signals Museum at Blandford Camp if he likes militaria and is a bit geeky. Just remember to take photo IDs with you as it is actually in Blandford Camp.

Word of warning, there is a nudist beach close to Studland

True that, but its about 2miles walk towards Bournemouth from Middle beach. / halfway around the bay, a limited section of it. Easily avoided.

Tyneham Village and Worbarrow beach. Near Purbeck. The Village was evacuated during WW2, never reoccupied and is now slap bang in the middle of a firing range. It’s well spooky. The beach is one of Dorset’s hidden gems, because it’s too far for most people to walk. Combine with Lunch at the Compasses in Worth Maltravers and stop in Weymouth for fish and chips on the way home.

Shaftesbury

Take a walk along "Park Walk"

Then down "Gold Hill" where the Hovis advert was filmed...

Hovis 'Bike' advert 1973 (Britain's favourite TV ad)

Directed by Ridley Scott.

Also small but good fossil museum at Compasses and a sketch by Augustus John on the wall in one of the back rooms.
