I’d probably recommend Fossgate to the newcomer to York. start at Sutlers and work your way down past the Cozy Club , Blue Bell , The Hop ,The Fossgate Social, finishing at the Brew York tap room. It’s awash with great places to Eat too like Kao San Road Thai, Barbikan , Mumbai lounge. And Spark is just around the corner.

Taking the wife to York on Monday for a few nights; it's a city we've not been to since we were kids etc
Booked into the Malmaison and getting the train over (£55, return, for the both of us), not even worth thinking of driving across from Preston etc
Anyways; any suggestions of where to dine Monday & Tuesday evenings?
We're going to be seeing some of the sites (Minster, Shambles, the walk along the walls etc), but is there anything else we 'must' get in whilst we're there?
Cheers
A cruise down the Ouse is OK ... but even better is a leisurely walk along the banks ...
Start at Ouse Bridge and walk down the West bank along the Esplanade, past Castle Museum and carry on until you get to Millennium bridge (about 30+ minutes-ish)
Cross the bridge and walk back to the centre via the other side (through Rowntree Park)
If you do succumb to the tourist mayhem that is the Shambles tis worth checking out the snack bars next to the Shambles Market - some have tasty stuff (YMMMV)
York Art Gallery has a worthwhile cafe - the art there can also be interesting depending on the exhibition - also the nearby Yorkshire Museum and gardens.
How about a tour of the Quaker meeting houses thenCheers for that... Not interested in boat stuff; get sea sick on Windermere
Ref touristy stuff; trying to avoid that as much as I can, don't like busy places & don't like people haha... City breaks aren't my idea of fun, but it's something that we both want to do as we've heard a lot of good things about York!
@gintonic - have you tried this place? https://www.rootsyork.com/
Not really my thing but looks impressive as do the prices!
Most other stuff has already been covered but if you do go to the excellent Railway Museum make sure to wander around the labyrinth of show cases of 'things they have no room to display...'
