Off to York...

I’d probably recommend Fossgate to the newcomer to York. start at Sutlers and work your way down past the Cozy Club , Blue Bell , The Hop ,The Fossgate Social, finishing at the Brew York tap room. It’s awash with great places to Eat too like Kao San Road Thai, Barbikan , Mumbai lounge. And Spark is just around the corner.

Seconding Fossgate - lovey street for a stroll and a snack/drink and usually less busy than a shuffle through The Shambles ..

Taking the wife to York on Monday for a few nights; it's a city we've not been to since we were kids etc

Booked into the Malmaison and getting the train over (£55, return, for the both of us), not even worth thinking of driving across from Preston etc

Anyways; any suggestions of where to dine Monday & Tuesday evenings?

We're going to be seeing some of the sites (Minster, Shambles, the walk along the walls etc), but is there anything else we 'must' get in whilst we're there?

Cheers

A cruise down the Ouse is OK ... but even better is a leisurely walk along the banks ...

Start at Ouse Bridge and walk down the West bank along the Esplanade, past Castle Museum and carry on until you get to Millennium bridge (about 30+ minutes-ish)

Cross the bridge and walk back to the centre via the other side (through Rowntree Park)

If you do succumb to the tourist mayhem that is the Shambles tis worth checking out the snack stalls next to the Shambles Market - some have tasty stuff (YMMV)
York Art Gallery has a worthwhile cafe - the art there can also be interesting depending on the exhibition - also the nearby Yorkshire Museum and gardens.

Most other stuff has already been covered but if you do go to the excellent Railway Museum make sure to wander around the labyrinth of show cases of 'things they have no room to display...'

Avoid Betty's Cafe - unless you really like an interminable wait for a so-so experience ;)

Re the earlier comment about Meltons not being fine dining I am not qualified to be the judge of that but I will say it’s a lovely restaurant. I’ve had some great evenings there. If you do go I would recommend you let them do the wine pairings.

For a more informal meal I also recommend Trinacria. Run by a lovely Sicilian chap. However I think they close Mon / Tues so do check.

Also near Meltons and Trinacria are two cosy and friendly local free houses. The Swan and the Slip Inn.

Finally, perhaps a little pricey by taxi but Breezy Knees garden is great. 10 seperate gardens all arranged around different seasons and styles. There’s also a basic but nice café there.

It’s a lovely city. I hope you have a great time.

Cheers for that... Not interested in boat stuff; get sea sick on Windermere :D

Ref touristy stuff; trying to avoid that as much as I can, don't like busy places & don't like people haha... City breaks aren't my idea of fun, but it's something that we both want to do as we've heard a lot of good things about York!

How about a tour of the Quaker meeting houses then :D

Some more things to do…

The Jorvik Viking Centre. https://www.jorvikvikingcentre.co.uk/

York Chocolate Story. https://www.yorkschocolatestory.com/

Museum Gardens. https://www.yorkshiremuseum.org.uk/york-museum-gardens/

York Art Gallery. https://www.yorkartgallery.org.uk/

York Cycle Tours (not tried but well reviewed). https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attra...our_in_York-York_North_Yorkshire_England.html

And if you like bikes this massive shop is worth a visit. https://www.cycle-heaven.co.uk/

Award winning local shops just outside city walls. The restaurants and pubs I mentioned above are part of this and there other really nice shops and cafes etc. https://www.bishyroad.net/

Can't add a lot but it was nice to read this thread. Once on a flight back to London from LA a very excited young woman by me asked what she should do on her first visit to London. I suggested taking a train to York and I wasn't joking, It's fast and such a great place to go.

I could spend days pottering around that bit - just so much interesting stuff to look at. I wish other museums did the same thing.

Heather and I had fond memories of York we stayed there on our first trip away together coming back all but engaged.

Fairfax House https://www.fairfaxhouse.co.uk/ was a stand out for us.

Had always hoped to get back to York and Yorkshire but sadly it never happened. I will just have to go back on my own sometime.

If you fancy a fresh air walk (as opposed to a tourist walk :)) the area around the Knavesmire (racecourse) has plenty of traffic free paths - I do the Parkrun there most weeks. One of my best mates does the commentary on the tourist buses, he really knows his stuff.
The Blue Barbakan (Polish restaurant) has a good reputation if quite pricey (34 Fossgate).
