We’re All Going on a Summer Holiday

With the ending of Covid restrictions, it seems lots of folks are either going on holiday (our youngest flies to Lanzarote today) or have booked a holiday recently. So where are fishies heading to this summer and why that particular destination?

To get he ball rolling we have five days on the east Kent coast next month :

1. have travelled through the county but never stayed there
2. visit Canterbury
3. take in the coastal towns from where Turner did his fantastic paintings
4. visit Leeds castle

Not scandonavia then ?, ha. Might take the bike down on train to Brighton for the day. Other than that probably stay local Hampstead heath, primrose hill.
Also might take short trips to Eastbourne and Wimbledon for the tennis. If you like beaches there s a fine one at camber sands in Kent btw

Chatham Dockyard is worth a visit if you like that sort of thing. £25 entry but how often do you get to wander round a Royal Navy submarine.

Was in calabria, Italy, a month ago. Rather pleasant. I'm back in work in a week so holidays are not forecast. That said, it's a fairly long bit so a week away in say September wouldn't be out of the question.

There’s a variety of seaside towns worth visiting too - Whitstable, Broadstairs, Deal, Hythe…

A holiday is something I need to get around to at some point, I've never managed one.

They're a bit awkward on your own and I don't have the confidence to pull it off.

Not sure, my wife has mentioned Florence and Barcelona, myself, I could easily go back to Switzerland or Frigiliana (Spain), though I’d be happy anywhere, we’ll see.

I used to occasionally get sent to places in Europe for work. I'd always try and schedule it so the work finished on a Friday and my return flight was Sunday evening so I could check into a cheap hotel and have the weekend as a little mini-break on my tod. I found I really enjoyed pottering around exploring a new city on my own at my own pace. Being on my own in the evenings was the strangest bit. I generally settled for a good book and a couple of pints in a quiet bar.

Northumberland for the customary week.
The Welsh side of Hay-on-Wye for a week - may just be my imagination but the cottage accommodation was at least £100pw cheaper.

I too holiday alone, from time to time. I enjoy it but I'm extremely outgoing and like talking to people. I'm also fortunate that I'm into outdoor sport so there's something to do such as cycle to a nearby village or town for a look round.

In February/March I went on a cruise from Cairo to Aswan. In August I've a few days booked in Normandy, crossing the channel by Eurostar, and in September I'm off to Calabria. There'll probably be a weekend in Whitby sometime and my wife is starting to think that we could spend Christmas somewhere in Southern France or Italy.
We need to squeeze in a few days in Paris at some point too.

Sorry to hear that Matt.

Maybe join a club or something. When my father died, my mum joined a walking club, and that's how she met her current husband.

I noticed in our local post office window, a woman had put an add in the window saying she was new to the area and was looking for other females to socialise with. Just an idea...

Right now I'm sitting at a 4th story bay window looking out over the Dovey River estuary in mid Wales. To the south is the sand spit at Borth and the coastline all the way down to Aberystwyth. Very quiet and pleasantly sunny on the beach with just a couple of kite surfers and Sidney the seagull eying me up for some breaky through the window, about a foot away.
I need nothing more.

One of the advantages of living somewhere scenic, less need to get away. I am lucky enough to live in a house overlooking the largest common in England and it sometimes seems like a holiday every day. Quiet neighbours on one side and a Rookery on the other with bats and owls at dusk.

They probably mined coal in Margate as it's always been the pits. Ramsgate, however, is a vast improvement for its seafront and marina. Even the town itself is a few notches up from Margate, despite the Tate and Dreamland.

Last holiday was Oz in '09 and couldn't wait to get back. Even going into the 'Fine City' 3 miles away is an effort to be postponed if poss. Can't say I've ever been a great advocate of holidays abroad, though I've done some, and have now been to most areas of Britain many times. No place like home........
