Onkyo - gone bust

Seems the part of the market they are in no longer exists? Appears to me that Pioneer, and maybe Rotel may be in the same sector (although better at it), so will they survive long term?

Going forward, might not be much choice for 'starter' systems (for those who prefer to buy new), if any 'young uns' want something better than phone and Bluetooth speaker.

Might be some bargains on Onkyo stuff coming up?

Last figure I could see with a quick Google just then, around 1800 employees affected :(.

Shame all round, they produced some great AV receivers.

I always fancied one of these:-

Sound United wanted to buy them 3 years ago but Onkyo pulled out of the deal.

PAC owned by Voxx in a JV with Sharp bought the Onkyo/Pioneer Home Theatre division in 2021 presumably to incorporate into Integra units rather than keep the original brands going but maybe they will resurrect the Onkyo name after this, for a while Onkyo were the dogs b*****x of AVRs, superb power amp sections, ‘twas good few years back but folk remember them fondly.

I did not realise Pioneer were sold to Onkyo in 2014.
Sharp went in with Pioneer TV division in some sort of JV around 2009/2010 after the Kuro range ceased, most of the Kuro developers/brains were poached by Panasonic. Took many years to get a better HD pic than those old Kuro TVs gave. The Pioneer Elite brand is still in play as part of the VOXX deal.

Worst TV I ever bought (Kuro). Overhyped, overpriced. The bloody thing constantly buzzed (They all did, I had a replacement) and dimmed way too much. Sold it after 6months.

Sad news, any major producer/supplier like this going under is bad news for the whole industry.

Trouble is the middle market for separates has just disappeared. The vast majority of under 35s are listening on Bluetooth soundbars or headphones with their phone as the source.

I wasn't. Many folks with similar issues at the time. Some just put up with it after coughing up 1000's rather than loosing loads of $'s
Honestly cannot recall any trend of dissatisfied owners and the problems you had. I installed several of them in the early 2000’s and never had any of those issues, all plasmas of that era buzzed and pumped out heat so had to have fans, once isf calibrated there was nothing to touch them at that time for pic quality, my own one and the senior installers one are still working fine at our houses, that’s 15 years and it’s still about as good a Blu Ray pic as you’ll get.

They were used as the benchmark TV in tests for years after they were discontinued, Kuro TVs are still well regarded there are specialist outfits in the UK who refurb/keep them going such is their reputation and plenty of fan/positive reviews out there.
