The ones that got away- your biggest regrets over items you should have bought.

Presumably it's not OK to talk about women on this thread.

Well now, there was Judith, Louise & Siobhan ( two sisters:D) Una, Gloria and Sunday, that's the ones I remember from 1988, if only I'd known then what I know now;)

I did miss out on buying a MK1 Cortina for £600 in 1989:(, I only had £350

Easy one - a used Meridian 588 cdp in 2004 from Eastern Audio - I let looks take priority over the sound and instead bought a G08 which was not in the same league as the 588.

By chance I was in at the start of the Nait price thing as I wanted a Nait 2 for myself so stuck an add in Loot. I got offered loads of them and once I saw where the price was going I just kept on buying any I was offered to flip. Buy at £100 or so, flip at £150-250 or whatever they made on eBay. Must have flipped eight or ten of them, a couple of Nait 1s too. I did the same with LP12s, again with an initial Loot ad just to find a really nice one for myself. I got offered loads of them, so just kept on buying them to flip, keeping whichever was the current best myself. Not really possible to do that these days as eBay has established a pretty rigid value now. I never haggled, just asked the seller what they wanted for it and bought if there was a significant margin, walked away if not.

Next time, also sell stock options and your profit increases even more.

A rega io at Christmas was reduced to €388 from €419, I had it in my online shopping basket but my head informed me of the impending utility and motoring bill's, it's now €500, so interest is now completely gone.

Pair of Westlake (from memory) studio monitors from some studio in London. Tad 4001 horns and twin JBL 15"s... with a full set of spare drivers, for £600. No idea where I'd have put them in my 1 bed flat at the time, or how I'd have got them home (might have got one in the car). Saw they had them on ebay a few weeks later, think the monitors made just over £2k and the spare drivers were all sold separately.

A red Lancia Delta HF Integrale in superb condition, known history and with a known, named builder-fresh engine was offered to me for £4k about 20yrs ago.
Unfortunately I had my too- sensible head on.

I've never had non-buyers remorse for hifi or audio stuff, since it's just a means to an end: 99% of the aesthetic, intellectual, cultural, emotional appeal is all in the music. tinkering around the edges with equipment is actually an entirely- different sort of a thing.

1998, Technics RS1500 open reel deck in Exeter Cash Converters - £99.

I was skint at the time, and didn't know they did layaway. Oh well.

That same year, I got an Akai CR81D 8track cartridge recorder for £20 though so that made up for it.

One I DIDN'T let get away was a pair of Tannoy DC2000s (boxed, mint) for £15 on the newsgroups at work in 2009. Bought some open frame stands for them which cost six times what I'd paid for the Tannoys! Still in the main system now...

Some people might feel the same way about the Lancia as a means of transport, but I get you. :p

My biggest 'one that got away'
My company was next door to Rogers who went bust around 1998. Andy Whittle and myself agreed to move their whole stock of LS3/5a cabinets, grilles, crossovers, packing etc into my place. They had no drivers but a provisional deal was done with KEF so we could restart production.

The receivers agent turned up quicker than expected so we had to deal with him too. No problem he says but please wait a few days for me to get organised and then you can have the lot. Promised to give us first pickings on everything in the factory.

Not long after, I see out of my office, loads of L3s/5a stuff being loaded into a vehicle. I went to see the agent for an explanation. 'Oh, he kept ringing and pestering me so I let him come over....didn't realise that was what you wanted' That guy was Doug Sterling and the rest is history!

To add insult to injury, there was a pair of very large speakers under covers, painted metallic blue. I didn't know what they were but looked great. Another deal done, £100. A week later I saw them loaded in the back of an Escort cabriolet (roof down of course) Aaargh!! Rang Andy who said that they were 'money no object hi end prototypes' with Dynaudio professional drivers and special power amps etc! He said they were amazing. Only been used for a staff party after production of them was abandoned for financial reasons.

Out of all the stories so far, this is the one that induces that sharp, almost painful wincing feeling that tells of a true opportunity lost. It's still making me clench my teeth and grimace more than 10 minutes after I first read it!

My childhood records (sentimental reasons only, mostly horrible, though early Adam Ant I still enjoy), my parents record collection (Buddy Holly, Beatles, Blondie, and much more I forget) and my Grandpa's record collection (think leather boxes of early stuff, mostly not remotely my cup of tea, but the history!), all "dissapeared" when my parents moved house. Of course I had had many opportunities, in hindsight, to collect some or all of them in previous years but never did and then they were "gone".

Heard a used pair of Proac 1sc. They sounded great but as it was the day before we were going on our family holiday, i decided to wait until we got back....
Gone.

Over the last weekend a freshly factory serviced Naim XPS-T appeared on ebay, it was BIN for £1500, and is supposedly one of only twelve ever made

I've actually seen one of these for sale before and couldn't believe it but I waited too long and when I decided to go for it shortly afterwards, within 5 minutes it had gone.........
