Post-Trump: III (decline, further tantrums, legal proceedings, book deals etc)

The argument seems to be that, as it doesn't appear in the Constitution, it cannot possibly be a constitutional right. But then, a lot of things don't appear in a document written in the late 18th century!

At the time the Constitution was written, there was no prohibition on abortion. It was just accepted that it was something women sometimes had to do. It was a private matter. Not a thought was given to either guaranteeing it as a right or banning it, it was a dirty little fact of life that wasn't talked about. The beginnings of anti-abortion legislation didn't come along until a hundred years later, during the Victorian era.

If only conservatives cared about maternal welfare and post delivery child welfare.

"In 2018, there were 17 maternal deaths for every 100,000 live births in the U.S. — a ratio more than double that of most other high-income countries (Exhibit 1). In contrast, the maternal mortality ratio was three per 100,000 or fewer in in the Netherlands, Norway, and New Zealand."

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4856058/

"In 2013, the US infant mortality rate (IMR) ranked 51st internationally, comparable to Croatia, despite an almost three-fold di erence in GDP per capita.1 "

Reminds me of the Barney Frank quote,

"The Moral Majority supports legislators who oppose abortions but also oppose child nutrition and day care. From their perspective, life begins at conception and ends at birth."

I've always been of the opinion that the GOP's focus on Roe was a sop to keep the evangelicals onside, but the GOP clearly does not care about the life of unborn babies, because they repeatedly block funding for maternal and child healthcare and public education.

I've always thought that it was to keep up a good supply of targets for NRA members to gun down in school shootings!

Pro-life, pro-death. They get to determine.

^ it is nothing to do with abortion for those at the top pushing this agenda. It is about money and politics. They couldn't care less about abortion.

Agree. Politics is about economics, all the social stuff is just a hook to attract useful idiots.

Trump’s legacy looks likely to be the far-right “pro life” judges he appointed. Mississippi now on the verge of setting abortion rights back to Taliban times. White conservative religious men dictating what women do with their own bodies. What could possibly go wrong? Lead item on Newsnight now.

But the white, male Christian fundamentalist right want to keep full control of ‘their’ women.
Ignoring the fact that many other religions, e.g. Judaism, don't have this prohibition on abortion - essentially, they are forcing their religious views on the rest of the country, which would appear to run contrary to the "non-establishment of religion" bit of the Constitution.

Maybe this is the right thread for this. Scary but gives an idea how hard it is to push boulder of gun control up the hill.
