Today's haul. An old favourite (Arran quarter cask) and two new (to me, I'm always late to the party), hopefully interesting, non-scotches.
Incidentally I notice the Bunna 12 cask strength is up on MoM

Nice gear there...the Cotswolds is great value compared to the other new distilleries especially when on offer.

Apologies re the Bunna 12 CS - I was over eager when recommending it direct from the distillery website as it now appears to be cheaper everywhere else.
Roy is covering it and other cask strength releases on his Thurs. vPub this week.

I was wary of such young whisky but it's had plenty of acclaim, so I'm, very generously, prepared to give the Cotswolds a chance...I'm also curious because my local gin distillery (Chase in Herefordshire) also has casks of it's very fine base spirit slowly turning golden brown.

Re: the Bunna it's better to be safe than sorry! I'm more than happy to deal direct - they're a great 'jobbing' distillery and the tastings at warehouse 9 were a good craic with Colin.

Distilleries popping up everywhere...I wonder how many are due to come on flow. Edit - 14 (!):

Some of those are new-old such as Brora and Rosebank. There will be a saturation point coming you'd think.

I'm amazed by how many craft gin suppliers there are now.
https://www.thedrinksbusiness.com/2020/03/uk-distillery-numbers-continue-to-rise/
"Nearly 90 new distilleries got the go-ahead in 2019, the official stats show – a record number, with 62 new distilleries opening in the UK and a further 26 in Scotland."

isn't their base spirit made from spuds. When last tasted it, it was rather mediocre.

100s, literally every one has jumped on the gin thing. 10 years ago it started growing. I was running a "Juniper" society and Gin Tastings out of a mates cocktail bar in Central London

Yes, from the lowly spud. Made by themselves, local water (via Malvern hills) rather than bought-in natural grain spirit. Tasted at the distillery it tasted like, well, neutral spirit to me.Their vodka is lovely, as far as vodka goes. The several gins were nice too, but I'm not an expert.

Tenner off batch 13 of the Laphroaig 10 CS in the MoM flash sale.

This is all ex-bourbon cask matured so the first review on MOM is off beam.
For information and without wanting to start another thread war this batch is coloured - "mit farbstoff" on the German bottles.
Well received by Whiskybase reviewers:

Laphroaig were very accommodating at their distillery on our visit. Looking at a snap I took of the bottles, in addition to the 10 yo, we were given the 10 yo CS (either 2019 or 2021 as per your link) and Cairdeas Pedro Ximenez CS to try outside. All lovely from memory, although I may have been swayed by the location!
Not sure about the colouring, but the blurb on the back of the packaging makes a big deal about it being non chill-filtered to improve ' genuine taste and texture'...

Interesting review - Jim's not impressed:

I agree with him...

The Ballechin 10YO is trying too hard and I said that when we did the last distillery tour at Edradour and the guy there agreed with me

Now their cask bottles are MUCH better IMO; the Burgundy cask I had was excellent; but it was at the top of its price range

The 10YO ISN'T that heavily peated IMO; it is peated and it's bit of a fake smell and taste too, which is weird...

For me; at that price; this is where your money should go:

And, IMO, this is an interesting/good dram too:

Have the first two, love the Ardbeg and the PC will be the next peated whisky bottle I open.
You know I have been supping Glenfiddich 12 as an "opener" over the last few weeks and I just really like it.
A lovely nose and just a great no nonsense dram...down to the heels with it now; it was the first whisky I bought when getting into it in early 2020 and I will buy anothe bottle to replace it, so that Fire & Cane is now on the wishlist...

Couldn't help myself...

That's our New Years Eve bottle sorted :D

Interesting. I've not tried any India whisky yet - must get a bottle in (although probably a cheaper one than that).

This is what I went with this month: https://smws.com/campfire-contentment/ as I pass it regularly on the way from Tomintoul to Dufftown so wanted something from Allt-a-Bhainne (and as I know nothing much about them then it helps that it's cheap).

That looks really good!

I'm going to rejoin I think, my brothers still a member but I let my membership lapse a few years back. Wasn't using it enough really

I've bought quite a few bottles so far and have been pleased with them, plus the ones I typically buy aren't expensive for single cask, cask strength releases - and a lot are from distilleries that are otherwise difficult to find bottlings from.

Tonight I'm having a dram of this one: https://smws.eu/sweet-smoked-salmon-jerky/. It was their 2021 bottling for the Islay Whisky Festival and is a 7 year old, 59.6% ABV from Bunnahabhain. It's peaty - but more the Lagavulin style campfire smoke.

Aye; my brother had that and it was very nice...

I've a few of theirs currently via my brother; the Clementine Confit blended is VERY good IMO; only just taken the top off that

This has been excellent too: https://smws.com/a-real-precious-gem/
