Just seen an email suggesting that is dispensing with Satellite dishes. And also supporting a higher definition for TV.

Are they going fibre? Are they going to piggy back on Virgin and BT et al fibre networks.

Sky is set to launch a 4K QLED TV with Sky TV built in. It's claimed the TV – dubbed 'Sky Glass' – will let you watch Sky channels without the need for a satellite dish.
The TV will supposedly be available in 43-, 55- and 65-inch sizes, complete with built-in Dolby Atmos soundbars and 4K and HDR support. The 43-inch set is expected to cost £650 (around $880, AU$1200) – a third more than the Samsung UE43AU7100

If they dispense with dishes, that’s the end of our contract with them, as we still don’t have fibre here.

Sky have been talking about going over to a broadband-based service for a while.

4k TV is pushing the limit of current satellite / dish provision. >4K will need more Ka bandwidth. That is limited on current Astra constellation, would probably need new dishes for consumers and Ka suffers badly from 'rain-fade'.

To future-poof Sky boadcasts, it's now cheaper to go the broadband route and let satellite Internet providers provide access for those not on fast fibre.

The satellite TV operator in SE Asia Astro is moving to Internet based and has UHD content on fibre only. It is the future, geostationary broadcast satellites are expensive

If it's a TV, they won't bin boxes. Millions of customers are not going to instantly swap to a Smart TV, and Sky won't risk a mass exodus and loss of subscription fees.

Also, how do they multi-room this?

Nonetheless, an interesting development.
