Sony CDP-555ESD worth risking import duty from Germany

I've messaged the seller of the aforementioned CD player which looks in very good order but which has a sticking drawer which I imagine would be an easy fix. I know this player is highly regarded and at €500 + €60 for delivery it seems somewhat of a bargain. My worry is regarding any import duty coming from the Eurozone. Has anyone got any experience of this following brexit?

You will definitely have to pay VAT, plus a courier fee for the admin. If you allow perhaps +25% it should be within that. Plus you've the risk of damage in transit. You'd then have to manage the correct paperwork for a return, or your seller would have to pay VAT on the import!

Buying hifi gear from the EU no longer really makes any sense, sadly. I used to buy a fair bit of kit that way.

And if, like me, you live in the EU, buying from the UK is no longer worth bothering with; especially with the high price of the pound.

forget it
wait and pray but buy from the UK

The whole point of Brexit? Don't you hate it?
The other way around, it has now become impossible for Europeans (ok, me) to buy anything expensive from the UK. And that includes free gifts as well.
A sorry state of affairs.
Same as. Always had a great experience when buying from the UK, but no longer an option. Sad state of affairs. Maybe the Brexiteers have a point, but I fail to see it.

I think the magic number is £135 - below this vat should be paid by seller ( has to be vat registered with UK), more than this by buyer. I would have thought at that price many alternatives here in uk and no hassle

have it sent to a uk address ? and ask for it to be re sent with a lower value ? there is NO £135 threshold any more 20% vat + courier fees

Stop giving misleading info? The £135 is about where any VAT is paid. If an EU seller is not UK VAT registered and your item costs less than £135 you could end up paying VAT twice ( EU & UK - it has happened, why some EU sellers dont sell to the UK any more post Brexit, UK VAT registering too much bother.) Items over £135 any VAT has to be paid by UK buyer

I do not get this. There was no VAT for export out of EU or into EU. VAT is paid by receiver in their country. Did something changed or Britain now is special case?

My Sony CDP-R1/DAS-R1 from Italy is supposed to be here next week. Paid £420 in charges. Hope it all works.

Because of Brexit, the UK leaving the EU, rules changed

https://www.gov.uk/government/publi...s-goods-sold-to-customers-from-1-january-2021

"For imports of goods from outside the UK in consignments not exceeding £135 in value (which aligns with the threshold for customs duty liability), we will be moving the point at which VAT is collected from the point of importation to the point of sale. This will mean that UK supply VAT, rather than import VAT, will be due on these consignments......For goods sent from overseas and sold directly to UK consumers without OMP involvement, the overseas seller will be required to register and account for the VAT to HMRC."

The problem with this is that many small EU sellers are saying stuff this I can't be bothered to register with the UK tax people so have given up selling to the UK. It also means if you do buy some thing from the EU from such a seller you may be charged VAT twice - EU VAT and UK VAT if the proper documents are not present.

So when buying items less than £135 you need to ask the seller if they are registered with the HMRC. I dont know if all this applies to private sellers but does definitley to businesses. I think if you buy thru Ebay they do all the donkey work. It seems the consequences of not registering are not 100% enforced eg Polarcells.de

"We are not yet signed up to pay UK VAT.

The customs situation is still a bit fuzzy and unclear. What we
can guarantee is that there will be no EU VAT charged. So far we
have not had any UK customers tell us they had to pay UK VAT upon
receipt of the goods"

ok, it is only for importing into UK. Strange decision. Bought in January some tweeters from UK, no VAT from seller, paid VAT and customs at reception.

FWIW - I've just sold item to Germany, around £840 item. Buyer says there were no extra charges at his end. It was a straight delivery, see you later mate kinda thing. Interesting.

He was lucky.
I got a gift worth about £ 500 I think from someone in the UK and I had to pay a € 120 fee to the French customs. I contacted them and they said it was a Brexit tax (I have the legal papers of the French administration for this) not VAT.
This is the norm, a specialist lawyer told me, something that was negotiated in the deal.
Great stuff.

I've had a £1500 DAC from Germany that came without any VAT charges, and the same with a couple of shipments of expensive tennis racquets.
