NAC 82?

I had a 82 with dual hicaps and it was good. But at a grand for a 20+ year old pre amp it is just not good VFM. Much better stuff out there.

So how you rate a 72 with 821s as opposed to the 82 then?
I was thinking of going to 282 from a 72 plus Avondale 821A boards, so I trialled a 282 for a week and then put the 72 back in, my preference was the 72, there were differences but they were just that and I felt the cost of the 282 was not justified for me. For me I believe my system is in a real sweet spot, and everything just works.

Good to hear as you say you have 821 boards can I ask have you kept the original 729 boards or have they been replaced or linked out? Seems to be several schools of thought on linking them out as Les gave the option of many moons ago

729s have been removed and linked out. As my only source is an NDX, I also removed the redundant boards as well.

82 is a huge step up over a 102. In the right context the 102 does have that incredible resolution but can be uncouth and shouty.

82 is a classy performer, the down side is its like of many power supplies.

Can't speak to your Avondaled kit but a stock 180 is a great amp.

Spot on post ,
I have a Nac 102 which is sounding fantastic which as Gaius says has incredible resolution which is addictive . I found that a NAPSC makes a big improvement on a 102 and yes a MkII NAPSC is slightly better both make it much more civilised .
82's do eat power supplies , I had a 282 with with Napsc 2x Hi-cap and a Hi-cap on my pre fix . Four power supplies for pre and phono is a bit crazy .

The second hand prices for Supercaps and Nac 52's is also a concern to me ,I'm thinking of jumping the 82 and going straight to a 52

What was the 102 typically sold with then?

I see on the Naim history page that it was replaced by the 202 which is often sold with a 200 but the 200 wasn't available back then.

The 102 was launched in '96 but, according to the same history page, doesn't seem to have directly replaced anything and the 82/180 carried on until 2002, and then there was the 92/90 running below that until 2000.

Wondering what it was based upon or was it a new design entirely.

The 102 was a new design and usually partnered with the 180 - their prices were pretty much the same as I recall. The 82 would have been considered a bit of a mismatch with the 180 at new.

The 102 replaced the 72, the 72 was typically sold with a 140 but quite at home with a 250.

The 102 is typically found with a 180 and CDX and SBLs making it the most aggressive Naim system but with some extraordinary qualities!

Regarding the 52, it is a lovely pre amp but in my view now way overpriced.

The 82 was more than double the price of the 102, so I imagine it was more likely to be partnered with the 250.

With what the 102 was usually partnered with before the 180 came out I'm not sure, but my guess would be the 92.

Thanks Ken

The 102 was released 4 years after the 82 and 180, unless you mean 102/90.3 was a likely pairing as an upgrade over the entry level 92/90.3 pairing.

Strange how the 102 is unloved I can't give mine away!

It's a capable amp, it's just not fashionable. It doesn't have the retro appeal of the earlier chrome bumper models and isn't far enough up the quality/value scale to have veblen appeal.

A couple of years ago I switched to a 52/250-2 and kept my 102/180 for a second system on the basis that they're now absolutely the value choices for vintage Naim, and just added a NAPSC - but you don't need any extra boxes if not desired.

Yes my 102 was paired with a 180 and one of Les W's wall warts that really did make a difference at very little cost. With a sonic bliss psu. Was rather good and wish I had left it alone! Too many chats with Les 180 went one of his 260z and a few ncc220 based DIY power amps later. Plus several flavour s of his power supplies. The box count made me want to go back to 32.5 or 72 as the mono 220s will be in half width cases.
Literally can't give away the 102 apart from rather insulting offers and being told a 112 or 92 sounds better!

The 82 and 282 were /are sold with NAPSC power supplies indeed they won't work without them . Which would suggest that they were considered essential to performance .
They are an upgrade option for the 102 and 202 no doubt to keep the 102 and 202 at a more affordable purchase price .
Had the NAPSC been a requirement for the 102 and 202 I wonder if they would be quite so unloved as they apparently are today ?

It's also worth remembering that a Pre amp upgrade was recommended before a power amp upgrade which would suggest that there are more Olive Pre amps in the world than Power amps

Wow ! The 72 and 180 were deal breakers in 1998 !
