Guy Martin’s blue minnow car programme.

I’ve never worried about having a few cubic feet of petrol vapour sat a few feet behind me, even when I drove a car designed in the 60s and slapped together by Gary and Lee at Dagenham!

And popping the bonnet open on a modern diesel while the engine is running. A fuel pressure of 30,000psi takes some understanding.

More worried than carrying around 50L petrol bomb in the boot? :D

Thats a fair point of course, I've seen quite alot of bad ice car accidents and not seen a car explode... so far,
but I know they can..
And they don't need a specialist to tow them away..

I'm not against electric car at all. I'm maybe over cautious, I've just rewired my motorhome with 3 different fast chargers and trips on every battery terminal. So I'm aware of the dangers
I once witnessed a shorted 12volt battery start a fire in a camping shop display.. it was a nearly instant combustion

Which safety features could be dumped?
If cars were autonomous, human error crashes are eliminated and the extra half ton of side impact beams and crumple zone and passenger cage become redundant.
With human drivers in control the lithium battery has to be armoured.

Everyone knows that it is only American cars that explode. Judging from Hollywood, they must be built with impact detonators.

Funny. And I don’t mean in a ho ho ho way.

Just on the performance front - I have a 380ps evo x - a legacy dual motor Tesla destroys me in a straight line, but can’t do corners. I’ve been behind one well driven one on the road, slower through the corners but can power out of them - on a track you’d just drop back before the corner and make sure you go through it at max attack to get by them on way out (same tactic for an heavy/powerful German Mercedes or BMW :)), but not possible on road without being stupid.

The new budget Tesla is quick to 100km/h but then loses out. Oh, and a Leaf will beat me to 60km/h from the lights unless I drive it like I stole it.

I bought the Evo in 2019, tuned it and figured it will be the last ICE car I own. Of course, that f*cking 3 cylinder Yaris GR has been released since then and talks to me…

Electric is the future, and battery tech continues to improve.

I will be giving the GR86 a test drive when it lands. I rarely feel that way about any of the modern bloated offerings. Toyota's on a roll

I agree with most of this but not the "can't do corners". It most certainly can do corners, it's heavy but the weight is super low down and there is no rolling to speak of. It is no Elise or Evo but cornering is way better than I expected.

Let's hope you dont overdo it with all those amps under your ass..

I'm really not wanting to be negative about battery power, hopefully it's the future..but it all seems to be all comprises at the moment

I didn’t say it can’t do them, it just can’t do them as well as something lighter (with some very clever active diffs) :) I’m almost sure a Tesla will be my next car…or a Yaris, LOL

Yes, 4 door ICE cars that weighted nearly a tonne less than the new EV's...
EV cars are heavier but if I compare a Tesla Model 3 Long Range (1847kgs) to something a similar size and performance like a BMW 340i (1671kgs) we are only taking about a 10% difference and all that weight is carried very low down.
I still wouldn't consider an EV as a track car, but for brisk road driving I don't have any issues.

Some one (here at pfm?) pointed out that that means there must be at least the double amount of battery packs in circulation, even more expensive.
Not only that - but it would stifle development of batteries (that continues apace in the background). And design restrictions on the vehicle would be needed so that they coudl share standard battery packs. Its a non starter in the capitalist world.

IF you had a big fleet running from a central depot - then maybe.

Even if by some miracle they did agree a standard, Apple would just release a car with their own **** you proprietary anyway... :) :)
