I was going to ask wrt if these devices have a fully usable USB connection. Both for the idea of an added DAC and as a way to expand storage if the internal capability is limited.
USB should be no problem, many people plug in DACs to their mobile phones to get a better audio output.
Yes I was suggesting installing Ubuntu touch on a Fairphone as a way towards getting something closer to a familiar *nix environment to start work from if you are that way inclined. It seems there is a partially completed Ubuntu touch distribution for the Fairphone.
