AppleCare - is it worth it?

It's an insurance policy, so you need to balance what it covers against the (current) standard consumer protections, and the price of the cover offered by apple. I don't have it for hardware that stays put, on the basis that I mentally amortise things like computers over 12-24 months, so if it breaks within that time, it's likely covered by manufacturer warranty, thereafter I'm sort of happy to gamble with the cost or repair or replacement. For things like phones which I am forever dropping or scratching, given the maths on replacing a cracked screen, damaged buttons, etc. I find it worthwhile on a "just in case" basis, and factor it into the cost of purchasing it in the first place. I get my phones direct from Apple on the Apple upgrade scheme, so it's quite easy to see what the cost of apple care is over and above the price of the basic hardware.
