Another (pro made) record plinth

I posted this guy making a LP12 plinth before.

This time it's for a Garrard 301 ( + Ikeda 345 + Audionote IO-10 )

Fancy woodwork, fancy kit. Is a Garrard 301 really worth all this? (genuine question, I'm just surprised).

Up there with the very best IMO, and certainly not outclassed by the arm or cart. No idea how it gets even close to £13k though, but I’ve no idea how much the cart is.

Arm stated as about £5000, ditto cartridge. Only leaves £3000 for the Garrard 301 and woodwork.

I guess that is fair enough then. A really good clean 301 is around £2k these days, which makes the fancy plinth about a grand I guess, which isn’t outrageous for some nice materials and craftsmanship. I’ll watch the vid later!

You are paying for time - time to make the plinth itself and time in the past to make the templates, and the cost of Festool kit.
It is all very easily achieved in a modest home workshop, but would you bother?

I think the 301 was supplied by the customer so the plinth was 3k, seems about right to me.

Yes. If I’m in a position to make or build it myself I will. Whilst my efforts may not always be up there with pro made they are deffo good enough for me. I get a real buzz when I’m listening to my kit and thinking “ I made that”
I’m hoping to finish my latest project over the weekend :)

Fascinating video!

The end result was a bit "Whole Lotta Rosie" for me though :)

She ain't exactly pretty
Ain't exactly small

Hacking the plywood is quite doable with modest equipment, but the veneering take some non-beginner skill, and the spraying/finishing some facilities AND skill.

I think it would be straightforward to make "a plinth", but a good deal harder to make "that plinth" in a modest home workshop.

Don't agree, except that you'd need a lot of basic kit - an awful lot of G clamps for a start - not cheap. The finishing would be the only major hassle, but then you'd not have to finish using a sprayed coating. All very doable for those inclined to do so, with the patience.

Does anyone know what sort of spraying equipment is needed for that sort of work? I presume it's an air compressor type piece of kit. I've been thinking of having a go at some spraying work if it's not too expensive to setup etc. I could maybe pickup something used?

You require enough dry filtered air to suit the gun you intend to use. How large an area are you going to spray ? You also require extraction and a dust free environment for best results. It will cost more than you think and take you longer to learn the necessary technique to produce great results.

I was thinking of areas the same sort of size as in the plinth manufacture video above. He seems to do okay with his spraying in his joinery workshop - in the video you can see him watering down the floor etc to keep the dust down! There is no specialist paint booth etc. and the technique doesn't look too hard to do with some practice.

He has extraction in the heated girls room, filtered dry air and he knows what he is doing. I'm just pointing out it's not as easy as it looks.
