Chips Chops

Reading earlier that Jaguar Land Rover are pausing production because of a global chip supply crisis.

Apparently exacerbated because car makers increasingly find themselves competing with manufacturers in other sectors (such as domestic entertainment devices)

Any noticeable impact in the HiFi world yet?

I think there was a fire recently in a Japanese factory that produced hdmi boards & associated stuff for quite a few different brands, so stuff like AV Amps & even Sonos gear may be in short supply over the next couple of months.

The global semiconductor supply chain issues are having a profound effect on the technology industry, and auto makers are being bitten by their reliance on just in time.
Toyota faced a similar problem after the Japanese Tsunami and worked with the chip companies to hold stock.

Just-in-time - brought to you by accountants and Wall St - making engineers' lives very difficult.

That was the AKM fire, apparently responsible for delaying the MDAC2.

I work for a large global tech company - the current supplychain issues mean leadtimes for networking kit are over six months, rather than ex-stock, largely due to lack of chips.

JIT just makes the whole system very fragile, that’s why Taiwan is such a dangerous issue if IC production there is disrupted through conflict, America may well look at its strategic importance and go in hard. Thanks Wall St and the City.

I mean, who on earth could have predicted that people would react to being shut in their homes by going online and buying stuff o_O

"The chip shortage was heightened by the coronavirus pandemic. At first, many companies cut their orders for chips, thinking demand would fall, which led suppliers to reduce capacity. However, demand for consumer electronics rose during the pandemic."

Wall St, and not Taiichi Ohno at Toyota in 1952?
The bean counters embraced JIT with enthusiasm when they realised the saving that could be made by shifting the costs of carrying large stocks/inventory. Toyota may have been one of the pioneers but big business loved it.
