Ah ok, appreciate what you're saying - I can try that just to see if the server/usb/ DAC with no network sounds different.

However, I would have to live with the difference either way as I don't have a viable alternative to homeplugs.. I'm not willing to have cables all over the house- drilling between floors etc.

What about a mesh network? If you have to have ethernet, you could put a mesh node near to your stereo - most have ethernet ports.

I've heard mesh can interfere with Hue stuff, which I've got set up all over the place... bit fearful of causing a whack amole scenario.

I also think that the home-plugs could be contributing noise to the system and, if you can't go mesh, an alternative might be something like a wifi extender that has an ethernet port - for example:

It could also be worthwhile looking at a Network Player or Streamer connected to the DAC rather than the NUC.

I did do a comparison between connecting my Nucleus directly via USB vs via my Aries G1. The latter was a noticeable improvement. I think Roon themselves suggest the use of an end point rather than direct. Might be worth a try if you could borrow a suitable end point, just to confirm one way or another?

Absolutely worth a shot. And if you have a phone Roon will see that as an endpoint if you enable it in settings, so you could try streaming to it to see whether your noise issues persist.
