Cricket 2021 - all things cricket for this year on pfm

Early 80s at Jesmond in a Callers Pegasus match. Gower in his autobiography said he was his batting hero. He saw him bat live three times and each time he got a ton. The third time was at Jesmond. I was there. Got the photos to prove it. And the great mans autograph “To Graham, best wishes Graeme” also still have the pen, Parker stainless steel rollerball!
As I said Dad named me after him Graham Robert. Mam wouldn’t allow the “silly” spelling.

Must admit I didn’t get the bit about Windies quicks targeting him. When did he play against them?

On the rebel tours. Well over the age of 40 he scored a ton against every rebel tour to South Africa. Bradman considered him as one of the greatest batsmen he ever watched. High praise.
the Callers matches at Jesmond were all fantastic displays. At the time who’s who of world cricket appeared year after year. They loved coming as they were well rewarded. Put up in Linden Hall and lots of “socialising”.

You’ve got to hand it to Graeme Pollock. He was not only a great batsman but also part of a South African team that was probably one of the most gifted and powerful ever to have taken the cricket field. Had it not been for SA’s international ban in 1970 (which many of the players supported, to be fair) we will never know how truly brilliant they could have been as an international side (and over a considerable period of time, too).

Can you imagine that SA batting lineup (Pollock, Richards, Procter et al) facing up to a mighty phalanx of West Indian fast bowlers such as there were in the 1970s?

That would have been some contest. County cricket was lucky enough to experience a sense of it at the time, but truly international contests (with all the added intensity that cannot be replicated in county cricket) we were destined never to see, notwithstanding the various rebel tours that came later.

Some team. Barry Richards use to decide which county match was going to be the most competitive and bat as if it was a test match. It was often against the county with the best attack. Invariably he scored big. Imagine the opening pair of Richards and Greenidge.

Bummer.

I wonder if that means: Anderson and Broad back together for the second Test...?

Is Woakes fit? If so, possibly with Broad. I think it's important to keep those two from playing too much if possible.

As nobody has posted yet I presume you aren't watching live. Suffice to say that there is an absolutely priceless reaction from Kohli when he is out :D
Watch it live ?? Lucky bugger! Can't even listen to it on TMS here now. Brexit has struck again !

While Stone me - found a BBC comment site hiding under the name Cricket Social - not commentary, but a bit better than nothing.
